Aamir Khan’s ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ Heads To Sony LIV Months After Actor Ruled Out OTT Release
It was recently announced that Aamir Khan's ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ will be released on Sony LIV soon.
Following months of adamantly opposing a traditional streaming release, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has officially changed course. His 2025 hit ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is gearing up for its digital premiere on Sony LIV, eight months after its highly successful theatrical debut. The announcement, made this Monday, marks a significant shift in the film's post-theatrical distribution strategy. While an exact premiere date is still under wraps – with the platform only promising it will be “released soon” – Sony LIV has highlighted the acquisition as a major landmark.

According to their official statement, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ will be the streaming service's very first Hindi theatrical film to premiere on their platform.
The journey to this OTT release has been highly unconventional. When ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ hit theatres on June 20 of last year, it ignited a widespread industry debate regarding the shrinking window between theatrical and digital releases. At the time, Aamir Khan firmly maintained that the film would permanently skip traditional subscription-based OTT platforms. His primary goal was to fiercely protect the film's theatrical business, a medium he has long championed.

Instead of a standard streaming deal, Aamir Khan initially opted for a pay-per-view model. Just six weeks after its theatrical launch, the film was made available for rent on YouTube for Rs 100 on August 1.
This manoeuvre came with its share of controversy. In July, Aamir Khan held a press conference in Mumbai where he publicly apologised to fans and the media for deliberately misleading them about his distribution plans during the promotional tour.
“I fold my hands and apologise because I lied when I said Sitaare Zameen Par wouldn't be released on YouTube,” Aamir Khan confessed. He explained that he felt cornered into the deception to safeguard the film's box office potential, emphasising his deep loyalty to cinemas and stating that his broader vision for the film would have collapsed without that protection.
Directed by RS Prasanna and co-produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ serves as a spiritual sequel to Aamir Khan's beloved 2007 classic ‘Taare Zameen Par’. The narrative follows a basketball coach who, after receiving a DUI, is court-mandated to teach the sport to a group of neurodivergent individuals.
Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Genelia Deshmukh alongside Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, and several others, the film resonated strongly with both critics and audiences. The emotional sports drama proved to be a massive commercial success, ultimately grossing over Rs 265 crore worldwide.
Now, as the dust settles on its theatrical and pay-per-view runs, a much wider digital audience will soon have the opportunity to experience the film on subscription streaming.
