Diwali 2023: From Katrina Kaif to Alia Bhatt, take inspiration from Bollywood celebrities, if you are still trying to figure out what to wear.
It is that time of the year again! Diwali, the festival of lights, is here, and it is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. The festival is celebrated with great pomp and excitement amongst Hindu families in India. Diwali, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the victory of light over darkness, falls on the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, the festival of lights will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12. While fairy lights, lamps, firecrackers and rangoli are common sights on Deepawali, the auspicious festival typically spans five days, each with its unique significance and rituals. The five-day-long festival starts with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj.
The first day, Dhanteras, marks the auspicious beginning of Diwali. On Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, people purchase gold, silver, clothes, and gadgets as a sign of good luck and worship the god of health and Ayurveda in the evening. Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Chhoti Diwali, sets the mood for the main festival the following day. Homes are adorned with decorations, lights, flowers and colourful rangoli designs. On the main day of Diwali, people wear new clothes and gather with their families for pooja. Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth, is worshipped on this day. The exchange of gifts and sweets is an integral part of Diwali celebrations. Fireworks illuminate the night sky, and people gorge on special cuisines and sweets. The fourth day, which marks Govardhan Puja, is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Devotees offer 56 varieties of vegetarian food and drinks to Lord Krishna as a mark of gratitude. The final day is called Bhai Dooj, Bhau Beej or Bhai Phonta. This is a day for siblings to get together and show their love for each other by performing the tikka ceremony and exchanging gifts, sweets and blessings.
Apart from being the time to worship, gorge on delicious dishes and exchange gifts, Diwali is also the time when everyone dresses up in their best ethnic outfits. For fashion enthusiasts, Diwali offers the perfect opportunity to showcase their style and elegance.
