Anand and Devki: Businessman Anand (Jeetendra) initially gets entangled in a lie, pretending that street dancer Devki (Sridevi) is his wife to appease his visiting uncle (Saeed Jaffrey). They eventually fall in love and marry, and Devki gives birth to a son named Kishan.
Vicky and Yashoda: The couple become friends with another newly-married pair, Vicky (Vinod Mehra) and the pregnant Yashoda (Jaya Prada).
The Accident and the Switch: The two couples meet on an ill-fated train journey which results in a fatal accident. Vicky dies and Devki is nowhere to be found, leading Anand to believe she is dead. In the aftermath, Yashoda gives birth to a stillborn child. Out of sympathy for the devastated Yashoda, Anand has the doctor secretly switch his own healthy baby for the dead one, allowing Yashoda to return to her in-laws with a living child whom she names Kishan.
The Dilemma: Time passes, and Devki, who had actually survived and suffered from amnesia, reappears. She is heartbroken when Anand tells her their baby died in the accident, especially as she discovers she can no longer conceive another child. She becomes fond of Yashoda's son and eventually notices Anand's unusual affection for the boy. She confronts her husband, who admits the truth.
The Conflict: The film culminates in significant melodrama and conflict, with both mothers essentially claiming the same child, leading to courtroom drama and emotional turmoil.
