After months of uncertainty and repeated delays, South superstar and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's much-awaited political drama 'Jana Nayagan' appears to be finally heading towards its theatrical release. According to a report in the Indian Express, the film has successfully completed its review by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and the makers are now working on a final set of edits before securing its certification. The Indian Express cited sources to reveal that the film is likely to hit cinemas in the last week of July and is expected to receive an A certificate.

“CBFC has sent back revisions for the team to edit and file. By next week, we are eyeing dubbing as well. If everything goes as planned, the movie will be released by July end,” the source said.

Confirming the planned release window, KVN Productions' business head Suprith Mohan said the team remains on schedule. “Everything is going according to plan, and we are definitely looking at the July end week, or the August first week window for the release,” he told The Indian Express.

The latest development brings relief to the makers after a prolonged certification battle that kept the film away from theatres for nearly six months. 'Jana Nayagan' was originally slated for a grand Pongal release on January 9 and generated enormous buzz, not only because it marked Vijay's final film before his full-time political career but also due to its politically charged storyline following the launch of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in 2024.

In December 2025, the CBFC's examining committee reportedly recommended a U/A certificate after suggesting a few modifications. KVN Productions made the requested edits and resubmitted the film before Christmas, while the regional CBFC office subsequently informed the producers that certification was expected.

However, just days before its scheduled release, the process took an unexpected turn. The producers were notified that the CBFC chairperson had referred the film to a revising committee after a complaint alleged that certain sequences hurt religious sentiments and portrayed the armed forces in an objectionable manner. The decision forced the release to be put on hold indefinitely.

The film encountered another setback in April this year when portions of 'Jana Nayagan' surfaced online during the certification process. The leaked footage spread rapidly across social media, prompting an investigation by the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing. Authorities later arrested 16 individuals in connection with the leak. Around the same period, Vijay's political party secured a majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and went on to form a coalition government.

Directed by H Vinoth and produced by Venkat K Narayana under the KVN Productions banner, 'Jana Nayagan' features Pooja Hegde as the female lead, with music composed by GV Prakash Kumar. The ensemble cast also includes Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Ajmal Ameer and Yogi Babu.
