Bollywood Stars Who Turned Producers To Launch Newcomers: Alia Bhatt, Salman Khan & More

These Bollywood stars backed fresh talent.

The industry loves a big debut: the unveiling, the photoshoots, the promise that a new star has arrived. Somewhere behind the spotlight, though, somebody has to pay for the cameras, the costumes and the chance to find out whether audiences agree. For some Bollywood actors, that somebody has been the star whose name was already on the marquee. The results have ranged from career-making hits to expensive first lessons, while the newcomers themselves have sometimes gone much further than their opening-weekend numbers suggested.

With Alia Bhatt now introducing four young actors through ‘Don't Be Shy’, here are the stars who helped get other people's first big breaks onto a screen.

1. Alia Bhatt - Don't Be Shy

14 years after ‘Student of the Year’ made Alia Bhatt one of Hindi cinema's most closely watched newcomers, she found herself worrying about someone else's debut. She and her sister Shaheen produced ‘Don't Be Shy’ through Eternal Sunshine Productions, giving writer-director Sreeti Mukerji her first feature and putting Aarushi Bajaj, Ansh Duggal, Bianca Arora and Piyush Khati at the centre of a youthful romantic comedy. Alia said she was more nervous introducing the four young actors and their director than she had been about her own start. Veteran faces including Neha Dhupia, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Anurag Basu rounded out the cast.

The story follows Shy, whose carefully mapped-out life gets a rewrite when her boyfriend dumps her and she unexpectedly befriends his new girlfriend. ‘Don't Be Shy’ premiered on Prime Video on September 25, 2026.

2. Karan Johar - Student of the Year and Student of the Year 2

Before Alia became the person opening doors, Karan Johar opened one for her. His glossy campus romance ‘Student of the Year’, released on October 19, 2012, introduced Alia, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra as its central trio. KJo directed the film and backed it through Dharma Productions alongside Red Chillies Entertainment. Rishi Kapoor and Ronit Roy gave the fresh faces a seasoned supporting cast. The film made Rs 96 crore worldwide on a reported Rs 59 crore budget. Its most durable result, of course, was the three careers waiting beyond graduation.

Karan Johar enrolled another class on May 10, 2019: Punit Malhotra's ‘Student of the Year 2’ paired established lead Tiger Shroff with Hindi-film newcomers Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria. Tara had acted on television before; this was her Bollywood film debut. Sacnilk put the sequel's budget at Rs 75 crore and worldwide gross at Rs 95.5 crore.

3. Salman Khan - Hero, Loveyatri and Notebook

Salman Khan has treated the launch film almost as its own genre. First came ‘Hero’, Nikhil Advani's remake of the 1983 romance, with first-time leads Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty. Co-produced by Salman and Subhash Ghai, it arrived on September 11, 2015, accompanied by Salman's own rendition of ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’. Sacnilk listed a Rs 32 crore budget and Rs 49 crore in worldwide gross. His next launch swapped danger for dance: Abhiraj Minawala's ‘Loveyatri’ introduced Aayush Sharma and Warina Hussain amid a Navratri romance on October 5, 2018. It grossed Rs 18 crore worldwide against a Rs 22 crore budget.

For ‘Notebook’, the introductions became quieter and more unusual. Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan Bahl played teachers who develop a connection through a diary in Nitin Kakkar's Kashmir-set romance; the two made their film debuts on March 29, 2019. Salman produced it with Murad Khetani and Ashwin Varde. The film earned Rs 6.6 crore worldwide on a reported Rs 20 crore budget.

4. Rakesh Roshan - Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai

Some launch films are designed to make a new face impossible to miss. Rakesh Roshan wrote, directed and produced ‘Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai’ for his son Hrithik's leading-man debut, then gave him two roles and enough dancing, romance and action to announce nearly every part of his screen persona at once. Ameesha Patel made her film debut opposite him. Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil and Mohnish Bahl appeared in key roles. Released on January 14, 2000, the film brought in Rs 78.93 crore worldwide against Sacnilk's listed Rs 10 crore budget. Hrithik had appeared on screen as a child, so the milestone here is his adult debut as a lead.

5. Dharmendra - Betaab, Barsaat and Socha Na Tha

Dharmendra built Vijayta Films into a family launchpad, and its first outing set a formidable standard. Rahul Rawail's ‘Betaab’ sent both Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh into leading roles on August 5, 1983, with Shammi Kapoor and Nirupa Roy also in the cast. Bollywood Hungama recorded Rs 6.75 crore in India and called it a super-hit. The banner's official history identified Dharmendra as its founder and the force behind ‘Betaab’.

The next generation arrived with its own weather report. Rajkumar Santoshi's ‘Barsaat’, released October 6, 1995, introduced Bobby Deol and Twinkle Khanna alongside Mukesh Khanna. It made Rs 33.9 crore worldwide on an Rs 8 crore budget. Then, on March 4, 2005, Imtiaz Ali's directorial debut ‘Socha Na Tha’ brought Abhay Deol to the screen opposite Ayesha Takia, who was already an actress. Box Office India listed a Rs 5 crore budget and Rs 5.28 crore worldwide gross. One banner thus helped introduce three Deols, two leading ladies and a director whose love stories would soon become a genre of their own.

6. Sunny Deol - Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas

Decades after ‘Betaab’ introduced him, Sunny Deol moved behind the camera to introduce his son. He directed ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’, the 2019 romance that launched Karan Deol and Sahher Bambba as its leads, with Sachin Khedekar among the supporting actors. The family banner Vijayta Films and Sunny Sounds were involved alongside Zee Studios. Released on September 20, 2019, it earned Rs 12.5 crore worldwide against a reported Rs 30 crore budget. The title borrowed one of Dharmendra's most familiar song lines; the new generation had to write its own box-office ending.

7. Aamir Khan - Taare Zameen Par, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and Dangal

Aamir Khan's production banner has made room for newcomers without insisting they all arrive in the same kind of film. In ‘Taare Zameen Par’, he directed and starred alongside Darsheel Safary, whose portrayal of Ishaan gave the December 21, 2007, drama its emotional centre. Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma played Ishaan's parents. It grossed Rs 98.5 crore worldwide on a Rs 12 crore budget. The following July 4, Aamir produced Abbas Tyrewala's ‘Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na’, introducing nephew Imran Khan as an adult leading man opposite the already established Genelia D'Souza. Its reported Rs 15 crore budget translated into Rs 82.1 crore worldwide.

Then came the wrestling mat. Nitesh Tiwari's ‘Dangal’, released December 23, 2016, put Aamir and Sakshi Tanwar alongside film newcomers Zaira Wasim, Sanya Malhotra and Aparshakti Khurana. Fatima Sana Shaikh delivered a breakout adult performance, though she had acted in films as a child. Sacnilk estimated Rs 2,070.3 crore worldwide against a Rs 70 crore budget.

8. John Abraham - Vicky Donor

John Abraham could have played it safe with an action vehicle for his first production. Instead, he put his money behind a comedy about sp**m donation and cast television presenter Ayushmann Khurrana as its leading man. Shoojit Sircar's ‘Vicky Donor’, released April 20, 2012, also gave Yami Gautam her Hindi film debut. She had already acted in a Kannada film. Annu Kapoor completed the central trio as the fertility doctor whose sales pitch sets the plot in motion. John appeared in a promotional song, leaving the film itself to its fresh faces. Sacnilk recorded a Rs 10 crore budget and Rs 54.66 crore in worldwide gross: a striking return for a debut vehicle built around a subject many mainstream romances would have avoided.

9. Akshay Kumar - Fugly

Akshay Kumar's Grazing Goat Pictures, which he founded with Ashvini Yardi, took a very different route with ‘Fugly’. Its young friends are pulled into trouble after a confrontation with a corrupt police officer played by Jimmy Sheirgill; the youthful ensemble included Hindi film newcomers Kiara Advani, Mohit Marwah and boxer Vijender Singh. Kabir Sadanand directed the film, which reached cinemas on June 13, 2014. Box Office India listed an Rs 18 crore budget and approximately Rs 14.83 crore worldwide. The movie did not catch fire, but one of its new faces, Kiara, plainly did.

10. Shah Rukh Khan - Always Kabhi Kabhi

Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment sent an ensemble of young performers back to school in ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’. Zoa Morani and Satyajeet Dubey made their Hindi film debuts alongside Ali Fazal and Giselli Monteiro, who had already appeared in films. Roshan Abbas, adapting the world of his stage play Graffiti, made his feature-directing debut. Gauri Khan was the credited producer for the banner. SRK even joined the promotional music video, but the film's young cast carried the story. Released June 17, 2011, it brought in Rs 4.18 crore worldwide against Box Office India's Rs 11 crore budget.

11. Shilpa Shetty - Dishkiyaoon

Shilpa Shetty's first production placed its newcomer inside a gangster story rather than a breezy star launch. Ayesha Khanna made her acting debut opposite Harman Baweja in ‘Dishkiyaoon’, with Sunny Deol, Aditya Pancholi and Prashant Narayanan in the wider cast. New director Sanamjit Singh Talwar had initially imagined the story as a short film before Shilpa and her partners backed the feature. It opened on March 28, 2014. Box Office India gave it a Rs 3.9 crore budget and approximately Rs 6.89 crore worldwide gross.

12. Anil Kapoor - Khoobsurat

Long before audiences started calling Fawad Khan a Bollywood heartthrob, he was an established Pakistani television star looking for his first Hindi film role. Anil Kapoor's production company joined Disney to give him one: the prince opposite Sonam Kapoor's irrepressible physiotherapist in Shashanka Ghosh's ‘Khoobsurat’. Kirron Kher and Ratna Pathak Shah supplied the two households with formidable mothers. Released on September 19, 2014, the film grossed Rs 53.1 crore worldwide on an Rs 18 crore budget, according to Sacnilk.

13. Farhan Akhtar - Gully Boy

In ‘Gully Boy’, the new face almost sounds like the person who has been there all along. Siddhant Chaturvedi had worked on the series ‘Inside Edge’, but Zoya Akhtar's Mumbai hip-hop drama gave him his first feature-film role as the charismatic MC Sher. Farhan Akhtar co-produced the film with Ritesh Sidhwani and Zoya. Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt led a cast that also included Vijay Varma and Kalki Koechlin. After releasing on February 14, 2019, it made Rs 235.7 crore worldwide on a Rs 60 crore budget. Siddhant arrived alongside established stars and still found a way to make the audience remember his name.

14. Priyanka Chopra - Pahuna: The Little Visitors

Priyanka Chopra and her mother Madhu used Purple Pebble Pictures to widen the meaning of a launch. Their Nepali-language film ‘Pahuna: The Little Visitors’ backed first-time director Paakhi A. Tyrewala and put young, locally drawn performers, including Ishika Gurung, Anmol Limbu and Sujoy Rai, at the heart of a story about siblings fleeing unrest in Nepal for Sikkim. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017 and reached Indian theatres on December 7, 2018. For the actors and filmmaker, the opportunity was a film carried by their own world and language. The project fits Priyanka's stated aim of helping filmmakers without inherited industry access.
