Oscars 2026: Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Javier Bardem present the award for Best International Feature Film.

The 98th Academy Awards will be remembered for many things, but few moments resonated as powerfully as Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ return to the Dolby Theatre stage. Standing alongside Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem to present the award for Best International Feature Film, the global icon was part of what is already being called the mic drop moment of the night – a bold political statement that has broken the internet. Dressed in a breathtaking white strapless Dior gown, Priyanka returned to the Oscar stage as a presenter for the first time in nearly a decade.

Her last appearance in this capacity was in 2016, when she presented the Best Film Editing award. This time, the stakes felt higher, both artistically and politically.

As the duo stepped out to present the evening’s top international honour, Javier Bardem took a moment to address the room directly. Wearing a “No to War” pin on his tuxedo and a matching patch, Javier Bardem exclaimed, “No to war and Free Palestine,” a sentiment that was immediately met with a thunderous round of applause from the Hollywood elite.

Priyanka Chopra, standing beside him, was seen nodding and smiling in visible support of the message. Following the statement, she transitioned back to the magic of the medium, delivering a poignant speech about the power of storytelling. “Visceral and engrossing. They remind us that international is never truly far away,” she remarked, emphasising how cinema bridges the gap between disparate cultures and borders.

Javier Bardem has always been unafraid to voice his opinions and speak for the people. People had already been upset by the activism, or lack thereof, done by the actress.

The presentation culminated in a win for Norway, as the film ‘Sentimental Value’ took home the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. The category was particularly competitive this year, featuring a diverse slate of nominees: ‘The Secret Agent’ (Brazil), ‘It Was Just an Accident’ (France), ‘Sirât’ (Spain), and ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab ‘(Tunisia).

The win for Norway marked a significant moment for Scandinavian cinema, presented by two actors who have successfully navigated the bridge between their home industries and the heights of Hollywood.

For Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this appearance cemented her status as a mainstay in the international awards circuit. Her history with the Academy is storied; after her 2016 debut as a presenter alongside Liev Schreiber, she attended the ceremony in 2017 and famously announced the Oscar nominations in 2021 with husband Nick Jonas. Her presence this year, following her recent work in ‘The Bluff’ and the high-octane series ‘Citadel’, highlighted her continued evolution as a powerhouse in the global entertainment industry.

The 2026 ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, was notably more political than in previous years. O’Brien set the tone in his opening monologue, joking about being the “last human host” amidst AI concerns and acknowledging the “frightening times” the world is facing.

The gala took place against a backdrop of intense geopolitical tension, specifically the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran. Security was at an all-time high, with the FBI and Los Angeles police on high alert following federal warnings. Despite the tension, the evening remained a celebration of art.
