Michael Gambon, known for playing the role of Albus Dumbledore in 'Harry Potter', died aged 82 on Thursday. “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia," his family said in an official statement, as reported by Variety. 

"We are incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Michael Gambon. He brought immeasurable joy to Harry Potter fans from all over the world with his humour, kindness and grace. We will forever hold his memory in our hearts," the official handle of Harry Potter tweeted. 

The actor made the role of Albus Dumbledore his very own, and fans still cannot imagine anyone else in this particular role.

Michael Gambon played the role of Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter films. 

For the unversed, Sir Michael was born in Dublin, and he worked in TV, film, theatre, and radio over his five-decade career. He also won four BAFTAs, three Olivier Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards in his career. 

Sir Michael also played the role of French detective Jules Maigret in ITV series 'Maigret'. He is also known for his role as Philip Marlow in Dennis Potter's 'The Singing Detective' on the BBC.

The actor was knighted for services to the entertainment industry in 1998. The actor had made his film debut in 'Othello' (1965). The other notable movies of his career include 'The Cook', the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover' (1989), 'The Wings of the Dove' (1997), 'The Insider (1999)', 'Gosford Park (2001)', and 'The King's Speech'. 

Talking about his personal life, Sir Michael had married Anne Miller and they had one son, Fergus. He later had two sons with set designer Philippa Hart.
