Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy will be back to portray the fan favourite character of Thomas Shelby in 'Peaky Blinders' movie. The streaming platform Netflix has confirmed that the 'Oppenheimer' star will be back as a Birmingham gangster. The new film is being made in association with BBC. It is being directed by Tom Harper and written by Steven Knight. Cillian Murphy, who won Oscar for his performance as Robert J Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer', dedicated the upcoming film to the admirers of 'Peaky Blinders'.
"It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans," the actor said in a statement, as per Hindustan Times.
For the unversed, 'Peaky Blinders' is about the titular crime gang in the aftermath of the First World War. The show had ended with its sixth season run in April 2022.
Set in Birmingham between 1919 and 1934, 'Peaky Blinders' follows the rise of the Shelby family as they navigate a world with radical social, economic, and political change.
For the uninitiated, 'Peaky Blinders' had originally premiered on BBC Two overseas, but after the show arrived on Netflix, the series became a worldwide phenomenon.
The series finale aired in 2022, but show creator Steven Knight never hid his intentions to continue the story in a movie.
"The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be," the creator told Esquire before the series finale aired.
Talking about Cillian Murphy, the actor, earlier this year, won an Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer'. This was the first time that Murphy won an Academy Award.
Christopher Nolan also won the Best Director for 'Oppenheimer', while Robert Downey Jr picked up the Best Supporting Actor accolade for his role in the film, that released last year.
