Vijay's 'Leo' Does The Unthinkable, Beats Shah Rukh Khan's 'Jawan' To Register THIS Massive Feat
Vijay's 'Leo' released in theatres on October 19, and it has now outdone 'Jawan' to achieve this huge feat!
When Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi-starrer ‘Jawan’ opened with Rs 129 crore on September 7 worldwide, one thought that this number would not be surpassed by any other Indian film in 2023. However, the unthinkable has happened with Vijay-starrer 'Leo', directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which released in theatres on Thursday (October 19). ‘Leo’ has now broken this record made by 'Jawan' to register the biggest opening for an Indian film in 2023. As per early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, 'Leo' has registered a gross worldwide collection of Rs 140 crore on the opening day.
With this, 'Leo' now also holds the record for scripting the biggest-ever opening for any Tamil movie. When it comes to India, 'Leo' registered a gross collection of Rs 74 crore, while the nett collection stands at Rs 63 crore.
'Leo', which is a part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), has now become the first film ever to register a double-digit opening in each of the South Indian states (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana combined), reported Sacnilk.
The movie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has also become the first Indian film to score Rs 10 crore or more for any day in Kerala.
Speaking of 'Leo', the new Tamil movie, released in theatres on Thursday (October 19), amid high expectations and many controversies. For the unversed, the movie has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.
Many political outfits criticised Vijay for glorifying smoking, and later the director was also pulled up for romanticising violence. Upon its release, 'Leo' received mixed reviews.
Ahead of the release of ‘Leo’, director Lokesh Kanagaraj had taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express his feelings. He thanked the fans and concluded his note with, "And to answer all your questions if this film comes under ‘LCU’ or not, you’ll find out in a few hours.”
The cast of ‘Leo’ also includes Gautham Menon, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, Trisha, Priya Anand, and Mansoor Ali Khan. Anirudh Ravichander of 'Jawan', and 'Jailer' fame, has composed the music for the film.
Arjun and Sanjay Dutt are playing the role of main antagonists in 'Leo'. It is not known whether 'Leo' is based on David Cronenberg’s 'A History of Violence', which had released in 2005.
