Speculation surrounding a theatrical re-release of '3 Idiots' has finally been put to rest by producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Responding to reports suggesting that Rajkumar Hirani's beloved 2009 film would return to cinemas, Vidhu Vinod Chopra clarified that the claims were inaccurate and urged audiences not to treat them as factual. The rumours had surfaced last week, with several media outlets reporting that the blockbuster would hit theatres again on September 4.
However, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films issued an official statement in which the producer described the reports as "factually incorrect," effectively ruling out any immediate re-release plans.
"With reference to recent media reports claiming that 3 Idiots will be re-released on 4th September, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films would like to clarify that these reports are false and factually incorrect," Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films said in an official statement.
“We request members of the media and fans to rely solely on official announcements made through Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films' verified channels. We urge media publications to refrain from publishing or circulating unverified information,” the statement added.
The clarification comes shortly after '3 Idiots' found itself at the centre of a fresh debate involving actor Aamir Khan and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk. The discussion reignited after Aamir stated that the film was not based on Wangchuk, distancing the project from long-standing claims linking the activist to the story.
Directed, written and edited by Rajkumar Hirani, '3 Idiots' was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and featured an ensemble cast led by Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Mona Singh and Omi Vaidya played pivotal supporting roles. Released in 2009, the film shattered box office records to become the highest-grossing Indian film of its time and continues to enjoy enduring popularity. Reports have also suggested that a sequel is currently under development.
The film follows the journey of three engineering students while offering a sharp critique of India's education system, examining the pressures of academic competition and rigid societal expectations. Over the years, '3 Idiots' has often been associated with Chetan Bhagat's novel 'Five Point Someone', while many also believed that Aamir Khan's character drew inspiration from Ladakh-based innovator and educator Sonam Wangchuk. Notably, the film's climactic scenes were shot at Wangchuk's school in Ladakh.
The conversation resurfaced after Wangchuk staged a hunger strike over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Amid the renewed attention, Aamir Khan maintained that '3 Idiots' was not inspired by Wangchuk, sparking fresh discussion around the film's origins.
