Jewellery Entrepreneur Slams Urvashi Rautela For Wearing “Ugly Copy” Of Cartier Crocodile Necklace At Cannes 2023
A jewellery entrepreneur called out Urvashi Rautela for wearing an “ugly copy” of the iconic Cartier crocodile necklace at Cannes 2023.
Urvashi Rautela is currently attending the Cannes Film Festival 2023. The actress has walked the red carpet multiple times but one element still remains the most-talked-about: her crocodile necklace. While some people appreciated her jewellery choice, it didn’t sit well with others. The trolling went to the extent that Urvashi Rautela had to make a video to shed some light on the significance of the neckpiece. However, there’s a new debate going on social media, claiming that her crocodile necklace is a copy of the original piece by Cartier.
On the first day of the Cannes Film Festival 2023, Urvashi Rautela wore an enormous pink tulle gown with tiered layers of floral ruffles paired with the crocodile necklace. The pictures and videos of her look went viral, and the netizens turned them into memes.
Now a jewellery entrepreneur has lashed out at Urvashi's team for their poor research about the necklace. Jewellery expert Arundhati De-Sheth went on to call the necklace an "ugly copy" of a historic piece.
Taking to her Instagram Stories, she wrote, “I am hugely confused by this look in general. However, all personal feelings aside, is she wearing the original @cartier Maria Felix crocodile necklace?!"
In the Instagram story, she added, "And, who is the maker of the earrings? Clarification desperately needed! Won't get sleep."
In her subsequent Instagram story, Arundhati stated that France is home to Cartier, and wearing such a "shoddy, sad, ugly copy" was the worst choice. She added that India is rich in treasures and jewels, and suggested that Urvashi could have opted for those for her appearance at the film festival.
She wrote, "Wearing a poor shoddy sad ugly copy of a historic piece. Allegedly representing our nation and pretending to be wearing the real thing. When it's been hastily crafted in the back of beyond. Shameful @teamurvashirautelaofficial it seems you have not done any homework. We are a land of the most special treasures and jewels that she could have worn instead - this is blatant and so sad."
For the unversed, in 1975, Mexican actress Maria Felix got a customised alligator necklace made by Cartier, owing to her love for her pet baby crocodile.
It comprised two alligators, crafted in yellow gold, yellow diamonds and white gold. The crocodile eyes were adorned with rubies and emeralds.
Apart from Maria Felix, Italian actress Monica Bellucci has also worn crocodile necklaces twice at Cannes. While the actress sported the original 1975 masterpiece at the Cannes Film Festival 2006, she opted for another version of the necklace at the 2019 Cannes.
Coming back to Cannes 2023, several other Indian celebrities including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Diana Penty, Esha Gupta, Sara Ali Khan, Manushi Chhillar, Mrunal Thakur and Vijay Varma also graced the red carpet.
Anushka Sharma and Aditi Rao Hydari are also set to make their Cannes debuts this year as is Sunny Leone who stars in Anurag Kashyap's ‘Kennedy’, one of the four Indian films screening at the festival.
