The bail hearing for Rajpal Yadav’s cheque bounce case was held on Thursday.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday heard Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav’s bail plea in connection with his cheque bounce case. Observing that the Bollywood actor is currently lodged in Tihar Jail for failing to honour his commitment to repay the dues, the court adjourned the matter to Monday. As reported by Bar and Bench, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma opened the proceedings by remarking, “You have gone to jail because you didn’t honour your own commitment.”

The court further noted that on at least two dozen occasions, Rajpal Yadav had assured that he would clear the outstanding amount but failed to follow through.

During the hearing, the court pointed out that Rajpal Yadav’s counsel had earlier indicated that the money would be deposited before the court on Thursday. The matter was heard again at 2:30 pm after the defence took time to deliberate. When asked about the promised payment, Rajpal’s counsel stated, “I tried contacting him, but wasn’t able to. I have filed a bail application.”

The counsel requested that the matter be adjourned until Monday, adding, “I will come up with something by then.” The High Court agreed and directed the complainant to file a reply to the bail application. Addressing the complainant, the court said, “You need to file a reply. When I was going through the file, there were so many things we didn’t even know. They have challenged the first order before the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court didn’t give them any relief. Anyways, we will have it on Monday.”

The legal dispute dates back to 2010, when Rajpal borrowed Rs 5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut, ‘Ata Pata Laapata’ (2012). After the film underperformed at the box office, the actor faced financial distress and struggled to repay the loan. Several cheques issued by him subsequently bounced, leading to legal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act. He now reportedly owes Rs 2 crore to the financier.

Since his arrest, several members of the film fraternity have extended support. According to his manager, actors including Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn have offered assistance. Sonu Sood was among the first from the industry to publicly step forward in support of Rajpal Yadav.
