‘Dhurandhar’ Star Sara Arjun To Portray Madhubala In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Upcoming Biopic: Report
Sara Arjun is set to headline a long-awaited Madhubala biopic backed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, with the ambitious project now heading for an OTT release.
After years of whispers, industry delays, and immense anticipation, the curtains have finally been raised on one of the most ambitious casting decisions in recent Bollywood history. Sara Arjun, the breakout star who captivated audiences in the record-shattering ‘Dhurandhar’ franchise, has been officially confirmed to step into the legendary shoes of Madhubala for an upcoming biographical drama. The project, which is being backed by renowned director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, marks a significant turning point for a production that has spent years in development limbo.

The film, which remains untitled for now, is set to be directed by Jasmeet K. Reen. Reen, who earned widespread acclaim for her directorial debut with the Alia Bhatt-starrer ‘Darlings’, is now tasked with bringing the “Venus of Indian Cinema” to life on screen. According to Variety India, the production gained fresh momentum only after Sanjay Leela Bhansali came on board as a producer, providing the necessary creative and financial backing to move forward following previous budget constraints.

In a notable shift in strategy, the film is now being developed as a direct-to-streaming project. While biopics of this scale are often destined for the big screen, report from Variety India suggests the makers are eyeing a major OTT platform for its release. This move highlights the changing landscape of Indian content, where high-budget, prestige dramas are increasingly finding a home on digital platforms. Fans won't have to wait much longer for cameras to roll, as the film is scheduled to go on floors in July 2026.
For Sara Arjun, this role represents a massive leap into the Hindi film industry. While she first caught the public’s eye as a talented child artist – notably making her debut at just six years old in the acclaimed 2011 Tamil drama ‘Deiva Thirumagal’ – it was her role as Yalina Jamali in Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar’ (2025) and its sequel, ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, that cemented her status as a powerhouse. Headlined by Ranveer Singh, the franchise has reportedly crossed a staggering Rs 3,000 crore globally, making Sara one of the most sought-after young actors today.
Stepping into the world of Madhubala is no small feat, and Sara has reportedly already begun intensive preparation. The actress is working to capture the timeless beauty, grace, and unique screen presence that defined Madhubala’s career. The narrative is expected to go beyond her silver screen legacy, delving deep into the complexities of her personal life. The biopic will explore her emotional highs and lows, including her highly discussed relationship with Dilip Kumar and her subsequent marriage to Kishore Kumar, leading up to her tragic and untimely death at the age of 36.
While the lead actress has been locked, the hunt for the pivotal male leads is still ongoing. Casting directors are currently searching for actors to portray the two most significant men in Madhubala’s life: the legendary Dilip Kumar and the multifaceted Kishore Kumar. Interestingly, before Sara Arjun was finalised, industry buzz suggested that Kiara Advani was in talks for the role. However, those plans did not materialize, eventually opening the door for Sara to take on what many consider the role of a lifetime.
With Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s signature aesthetic and Jasmeet K. Reen’s directorial sensibilities, it remains to be seen how this tribute to one of Indian cinema’s most iconic faces unfolds.
