A celebrity romance can look wonderfully polished in wedding photographs. Put the couple on a couch, hand them some coffee and let Karan Johar ask a few inconvenient questions, however, and a rather different picture emerges. Suddenly, there are awkward proposals, household complaints, unexpected confessions and two people determined to take the same gift hamper home. Over the years, ‘Koffee With Karan’ has supplied plenty of these glimpses behind the happily-ever-after headlines.

Following Salman Khan’s Season 9 premiere, next in line are Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda, whose Season 9, Episode 2 appearance will stream on JioHotstar on October 22. The newlyweds and ‘Ranabaali’ co-stars are already providing plenty of material in the promo: Vijay jokes that Rashmika asked him to marry her a hundred times, while she says she had been asking for an entire year. So much for waiting around for a grand, cinematic proposal!
The teaser also shows Rashmika picking Allu Arjun over Ranbir Kapoor as her favourite co-star. When Vijay is asked about his best on-screen chemistry, she immediately interjects with “Nobody,” prompting his wisecrack about agreeing with the wife. There is a rapid-fire round and a game involving South stars’ popular titles, but the episode has not aired yet, so its winners remain unconfirmed.

While we wait for the full conversation, here are the couples who have already made themselves at home on the couch – including some who were together then and have since separated.
1. Deepika Padukone And Ranveer Singh - Season 8, Episode 1
The Season 8 premiere in October 2023 delivered something considerably more intimate than a standard interview: Deepika and Ranveer publicly shared their wedding video for the first time. Ranveer also described proposing during a Maldives holiday in 2015, revealing that they had kept their engagement private for three years before marrying in 2018. Between the proposal, meeting the parents and memories of their ‘Ram-Leela’ days, the episode gave their love story a detailed origin chapter.
The sentimentality did not stop them competing. During rapid fire, Ranveer named Ranbir Kapoor as his choice for a love triangle featuring himself and Deepika, reviving Karan’s proposed ‘Sangam’ remake. Deepika won the hamper with 73 per cent of the studio audience’s votes. Ranveer supplied several memorable answers; his wife supplied the winning score.
2. Ajay Devgn And Kajol - Season 6, Episode 7
Ajay and Kajol’s 2018 appearance was practically a masterclass in married-couple roasting. He teased her about the time she spent preparing pictures for social media, while their conversation covered family life, work and the rumours surrounding their relationship. Ajay also rejected the suggestion that he had stopped Kajol from working with Shah Rukh Khan. Their exchanges worked because neither seemed particularly interested in maintaining a perfectly coordinated celebrity-couple image. Kajol won the rapid-fire hamper, while Ajay won the puzzle round.
Ajay nevertheless walked away with the season’s most expensive punchline. Asked about a superstition, he said he had believed Karan’s films beginning with “K” worked – until they made ‘Kaal’. That answer subsequently won him the Answer of the Season award and an Audi. Kajol got the hamper; Ajay’s joke eventually needed a parking space.
3. Akshay Kumar And Twinkle Khanna - Season 5, Episode 2
When Twinkle arrived with Akshay in November 2016, even her husband appeared unsure what she might reveal next. She explained that their relationship had initially been intended as a fling and disclosed that she had investigated his family’s health history before marriage. She also punctured the action-star image with a much softer detail: Akshay could cry like a baby. There was romance too, with Akshay singing ‘Strangers In The Night’ and the couple sharing a slow dance.
Twinkle won rapid fire, turning questions about marriage, writing and Akshay into a succession of jokes that regularly left Karan scrambling. Akshay was hardly silent: his explanation of what his wife meant by saying she was fine amounted to a warning for everyone to take cover. The episode offered affection, everyday irritations and excellent comic timing in roughly equal measure.
4. Shahid Kapoor And Mira Rajput - Season 5, Episode 9
Mira’s television debut on January 1, 2017, quickly established that she could handle both Shahid and Karan. The couple revisited their arranged-marriage beginnings, including Mira initially not realising that a meeting with Shahid’s family concerned a prospective match. Her mother had even thought the proposal might be for his younger brother. Mira also recalled a condition for their wedding: no coloured hair, with Shahid then sporting his ‘Udta Punjab’ look.
Shahid described how Mira’s pregnancy had deepened his feelings and changed his sense of them from two individuals into a family. The competitive spoils were split: Shahid won rapid fire, although the hamper was presented to them together, while Mira won the quiz. Their domestic revelations were equally balanced – he was accused of loud burping, she of stealing the blanket. Glamour can only conceal so much.
5. Aamir Khan And Kiran Rao - Season 4, Episode 3
Aamir’s first ‘KWK’ appearance, in December 2013, came with then-wife Kiran, who discussed the adjustment involved in sharing a life with someone so famous. She spoke about valuing her own identity and finding her place within his family. She also explained that, even before their son Azad, her bond with Aamir’s children Ira and Junaid had made her feel part of a complete family. These were unusually thoughtful disclosures amid the show’s teasing and celebrity name-dropping.
Then the games brought out their competitive sides. Kiran won the rapid-fire hamper, and Aamir won the subsequent film quiz. His mischievous preparation included having the batteries removed from her buzzer before the quiz began. Their marriage later ended, but this episode remains a record of the relationship they shared at the time – and of Aamir taking a seemingly harmless game very seriously.
6. Abhishek Bachchan And Aishwarya Rai Bachchan - Season 3, Episode 1
Abhishek and Aishwarya opened Season 3 in November 2010 with an appearance that mixed superstar curiosity with familiar married-couple banter. They addressed the attention surrounding their wedding guest list, their friendship within the marriage and the assumption that an actress had to remain single to preserve her career. Aishwarya argued that marriage and professional ambition could comfortably coexist, while Abhishek described his elegant, glamorous wife as a buddy too.
Her rapid-fire humour was particularly pointed: she chose Mallika Sherawat as an island companion because, referencing Abhishek’s earlier comments on the show, that would ensure he came running to rescue them. Abhishek won the hamper; Aishwarya’s consolation was that it was coming home anyway. A practical approach to losing a competition against your spouse.
7. Saif Ali Khan And Kareena Kapoor Khan - Season 3, Episode 5
Before their 2012 wedding, Saif and Kareena appeared together in December 2010 and discussed the negotiations that come with dating another actor. They explained that they had talked about intimate scenes in their films and had, at that point, agreed to avoid on-screen kissing. It was a revealing look at the boundaries they were setting within their relationship, rather than a permanent rule to apply to every later film.
Kareena also teased Saif after Karan played an older clip featuring his banter with Preity Zinta. Saif won the rapid-fire round, although Kareena ensured he did not leave the conversation entirely unscathed. Their place in the show’s couples’ history was established during this visit, when they were still dating.
8. Lara Dutta And Mahesh Bhupathi - Season 3, Episode 11
Lara and Mahesh visited in January 2011 while engaged, and their proposal story had a wonderfully unvarnished first draft. Lara recalled Mahesh asking her to marry him around 2 am, without a ring, because he had not wanted to buy one before knowing her answer. A more formal proposal followed in New York during the US Open, complete with an Italian restaurant. Lara also described him as her Mr Darcy, giving the sportsman a rather flattering literary comparison.
But the tennis champion had another contest to win first. Despite Lara’s experience on the show and her established rapid-fire reputation, Mahesh won the hamper on his debut. The conversation also revealed his enthusiasm for Govinda and David Dhawan films. Between the no-ring proposal and his comedy preferences, viewers got considerably more than a standard engagement announcement.
9. Hrithik Roshan And Sussanne Khan - Season 1, Episode 8; Season 3, Episode 12
Hrithik and Sussanne qualify through more than one appearance. In Season 1, Sussanne and Gauri Khan were the principal guests, with Hrithik and Shah Rukh joining their wives later. It was therefore a shared episode featuring both couples, rather than a conventional two-couple interview from the opening minute. Sussanne also won that episode’s spouse-knowledge game. Hrithik and Sussanne returned for their own episode in January 2011, while still married, discussing their marriage, children and his career.
Sussanne also addressed the attention surrounding Hrithik’s co-stars and link-up rumours – discussion of rumours, of course, did not establish them as facts. She was willing to tease him too, naming Siddharth Mallya as someone she found particularly attractive. Sussanne won the Season 3 rapid-fire hamper, demonstrating that being the film star in the relationship did not guarantee victory on this particular set.
10. Javed Akhtar And Shabana Azmi - Season 2, Episode 23
A celebrated romantic lyricist does not necessarily deliver sweeping romantic gestures at home. Shabana made that distinction rather entertainingly during their 2007 episode, saying Javed had no romantic bone in his body. The couple discussed friendship, individuality and the everyday adjustments required in marriage. Their busy schedules prompted Karan to describe theirs as a phone marriage, with Shabana joking about meeting at airports.
Farhan Akhtar joined later, adding a father-son conversation about cinema to the mix. There was rapid fire too, including Javed’s admission that he wished he had written ‘Beedi’ from ‘Omkara’, with Shabana winning the round. Between Shabana dismantling the romantic-poet stereotype and Javed explaining why partners need space to flourish, this was a particularly articulate version of the couples’ episode.
11. Shahid Kapoor And Kareena Kapoor - Season 2, Episode 4
Long before their separate appearances with their eventual spouses, Shahid and Kareena shared the couch as a dating couple in 2007. Kareena discussed his positive influence on her, while Shahid praised her loyalty. The episode offered a snapshot of their relationship before their separation later that year.
Karisma Kapoor joined as the rapid-fire judge, but she also supplied one of the most recognisable family details: she sometimes found herself mediating their arguments. She explained that she would support Shahid and reprimand Kareena when she thought he was right. Karisma ultimately named Kareena the rapid-fire winner. She might have had to share her sister’s support in their arguments, but the hamper was hers.
12. John Abraham And Bipasha Basu - Season 2, Episode 13
John and Bipasha were another established dating couple when they appeared together in May 2007. Asked about the attention their partner received, both treated it as part of their profession rather than an automatic cause for jealousy. John praised Bipasha’s appearance in ‘Dhoom 2’ and jokingly tried to claim credit for her training; she promptly told him not to lie on television. A compliment followed by an immediate correction: very couple-like behaviour.
They also discussed their careers and early struggles, with Bipasha speaking about the work behind her glamorous screen image. Bipasha took home the hamper. Their relationship eventually ended, but the episode belongs to the period when they were openly together, making them a clear fit for this trip through the Koffee archives.
13. Shah Rukh Khan And Gauri Khan - Season 1, Episode 8
Gauri’s first-season visit in 2005 put her perspective on a much-discussed marriage at the centre of the conversation. Appearing initially with Sussanne, she spoke about the balance between her and Shah Rukh’s religious backgrounds, explaining that respecting his faith did not require her to give up her own. She also discussed organising family festivals and the different influences within their home. Shah Rukh joined later, alongside Hrithik, completing the two-couple gathering.
Gauri had a sharp answer to the inevitable question about female attention around her husband. If he ever wanted to be with somebody else, she joked, she hoped she would find someone handsome too. It was a memorable reminder that the woman married to Bollywood’s celebrated romantic hero could deliver a pretty effective punchline herself.
14. Rishi Kapoor And Neetu Kapoor - Season 1, Episode 21
Rishi and Neetu brought decades of shared history to their 2005 appearance, discussing their journey from working together in films to marriage and their understanding of romance. Rishi credited Neetu with the effort behind their marriage, admitting that he could be difficult. That frank acknowledgement gave the conversation something more substantial than a polished account of a famous screen pairing becoming a real-life couple. Rishi won their rapid-fire contest, adding a competitive flourish to an episode built around their relationship and life together.
From private wedding footage to a proposal made without a ring, the couch has collected plenty of love stories that would never fit into an anniversary caption. Rashmika and Vijay’s promo suggests another lively addition on October 22. Whether their full episode delivers more romantic revelations or more marital one-upmanship, the hamper should give them something extra to negotiate.
