Koffee With Karan
The biggest moments from 'Koffee With 'Karan'.

A celebrity couch, a coveted hamper and a host who knows exactly when to ask the next question: ‘Koffee With Karan’ has always made a surprisingly combustible combination. Guests arrive to discuss films, friendships and relationships, then leave with one sentence following them for years. Sometimes it is a wonderfully quick comeback. Sometimes it is an answer they later regret. And occasionally, the conversation travels so far beyond entertainment that apologies, official inquiries and disciplinary action follow. Across its long run, Karan Johar’s show has supplied Bollywood with a parallel history – one written through rapid-fire answers, awkward silences and expressions the camera catches before anyone can recover.

Now, the show is preparing for its farewell. Season 9 will premiere on JioHotstar on October 14, 2026, and Karan has announced that it will be the final season. He has spoken about wanting to devote the next phase of his career to directing more films. The series, which began in 2004 with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, is therefore returning with the weight of more than two decades of conversations behind it.

Salman Khan will be the opening guest, as confirmed by the new promo. It is an apt choice: Salman previously opened Season 4 with an answer that remains among the show’s most recognisable moments. In the latest teaser, Karan reminds him that this is the last season and suggests that the conversation could go anywhere. Given the show’s history, that hardly feels like an idle promise.

Before the final round of questions begins, here are the exchanges that made the couch a talking point far beyond the episode itself.

1. Kangana Ranaut called Karan the “flag bearer of nepotism”

Season 5, Episode 16 | Aired: February 19, 2017

This was the moment the guest turned the scrutiny squarely onto the host. Appearing with ‘Rangoon’ co-star Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut imagined Karan’s role in a possible biopic about her life: an industry insider intolerant towards outsiders and the “flag bearer of nepotism”. The line was delivered directly to the man whose show she was sitting on, which gave it a force no interview about an unnamed industry establishment could have matched. An episode promoting a film became a much larger argument about access, influence and who gets opportunities in Bollywood.

The dispute continued off the couch. At a London event, Karan accused Kangana of playing the victim and woman cards and said she should leave the industry if she felt so terrorised by it. Months later, he, Saif and Varun Dhawan revived the controversy with their “Nepotism rocks” routine at IIFA. That drew fresh criticism; Varun apologised, while Karan acknowledged that the joke had gone wrong and took responsibility for its conception.

2. Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul’s appearance led to cricketing consequences

Season 6, Episode 12 | Aired: January 6, 2019

Few ‘Koffee With Karan’ appearances have had consequences as concrete as this one. Hardik Pandya’s comments about women, including boasts about his encounters and an account of identifying several women to his parents, drew widespread condemnation as s**ist and objectifying. KL Rahul shared the couch, although the most widely criticised remarks came from Hardik Pandya. What might have been expected to be a crossover between cricket and celebrity entertainment became a serious disciplinary matter. Hardik apologised publicly, but the controversy continued to grow.

On January 11, the BCCI suspended both players and directed them to return to India from the Australia tour. Their suspensions were lifted on January 24 pending the subsequent process. In April, BCCI ombudsman D. K. Jain ordered each to pay Rs 20 lakh towards charitable causes, including assistance to bereaved paramilitary families and cricket for the visually impaired. The episode was also withdrawn. Karan later said he felt responsible for the repercussions of a conversation conducted on his platform.

3. Kareena Kapoor questioned Priyanka Chopra’s accent

Season 3, Episodes 5 and 7 | Aired: December 5 and December 19, 2010

Some ‘Koffee’ exchanges take two episodes to complete. Sitting beside Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor asked of Priyanka Chopra, “Where does she get that accent from?” When Priyanka subsequently appeared with Shahid Kapoor, Karan carried the question across. Her response was immediate: “The same place where her boyfriend gets it from.” The reference to Saif made the answer especially sharp, turning Kareena’s original question back towards her own couch companion.

The exchange became shorthand for their much-discussed rivalry, but the show later offered a different picture of their equation. Kareena and Priyanka appeared together in Season 6, Episode 19, on February 24, 2019, discussing their lives and marriages. That later pairing matters: a memorable comeback can outlive the circumstances that produced it. Their ‘Koffee’ history contains both the pointed early exchange and the ease of eventually sharing the same couch.

4. Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor took digs at Ranbir Kapoor

Season 3, Episode 3 | Aired: November 21, 2010

Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor’s joint appearance became one of the show’s defining examples of how quickly teasing could turn into an industry dispute. Deepika’s con**m-related jibe about former boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor became the headline, while Sonam’s comments about his fashion sense and need for a stylist added to the episode’s pointed tone. Their shared amusement made the exchange feel like an unguarded conversation between friends – except that the audience included everyone they were discussing.

Rishi Kapoor publicly criticised the actresses and blamed Karan for encouraging the conversation, bringing family loyalties into what had begun as couch banter. Deepika subsequently explained that her comments were tongue-in-cheek and made in good humour. The episode captures a particularly combustible version of the show: personal history, quick jokes and an absent star whose family could watch the conversation unfold.

5. Alia Bhatt’s President-of-India answer became a meme

Season 4, Episode 5 | Aired: December 29, 2013

Alia Bhatt’s first appearance with her ‘Student of the Year’ co-stars Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra produced a general-knowledge slip that acquired an astonishingly long afterlife. Asked to name the President of India, she confused the office with Maharashtra’s then chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan, referring to him as Prithviraj Chauhan. The correct answer was Pranab Mukherjee. A hurried response in a competitive quiz became an internet shorthand for her supposedly poor general knowledge, with jokes travelling far beyond the people who had watched the episode.

Alia eventually joined the joke on her own terms. In 2014, she appeared in AIB’s ‘Alia Bhatt: Genius of the Year’, a spoof that sent her to a fictional brain gym to repair her reputation. The video included her family and familiar industry faces, turning the original embarrassment into a deliberately exaggerated comeback. The answer made headlines; her willingness to parody its aftermath made the story more interesting than a celebrity simply getting a quiz question wrong.

6. Emraan Hashmi’s “plastic” answer about Aishwarya Rai

Season 4, Episode 9 | Aired: January 26, 2014

The rapid-fire round can make a single word do an extraordinary amount of damage. Appearing with Mahesh Bhatt, Emraan Hashmi was asked which actor came to mind when he heard “plastic”. He named Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The answer generated backlash and remained attached to him long after the episode. It was precisely the kind of blunt response the format rewarded in the moment –and the kind that could become considerably harder to explain once separated from the game.

Emraan later revisited the remark rather than leaving it as an old television clip. In a 2024 interview, he said he regretted it, described it as distasteful and expressed a willingness to apologise if Aishwarya had felt offended. He also maintained that the exchange had been intended in jest. His later response gives the incident its longer significance: the race to win a hamper lasts minutes, while the answer that helps you win it can follow you for a decade.

7. Salman Khan made his virginity declaration

Season 4, Episode 1 | Aired: December 1, 2013

Salman’s ‘Koffee With Karan’ debut offered the rare spectacle of Karan looking genuinely unsure how to proceed. Discussing marriage and relationships, Salman said, “I’m going to save myself for the one I get married to.” When Karan asked whether he was declaring himself a virgin, he answered yes. The straight-faced delivery was crucial: Salman made the claim with enough composure to leave his interviewer visibly incredulous and the audience debating how seriously to take it.

His father, screenwriter Salim Khan, also appeared in the episode, adding another dimension to the conversation. Yet the virginity declaration became its enduring headline, repeatedly resurfacing whenever Salman’s private life was discussed. With the actor now opening the final season, the old appearance makes an especially fitting flashback.

8. Ranveer Singh’s inappropriate remark to Anushka Sharma resurfaced

Season 3, Episode 16 | Aired: February 20, 2011

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma appeared after ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’, but one exchange later drew attention for reasons entirely separate from their film’s success. Sitting beside Anushka, Ranveer asked whether she wanted her backside pinched, using a crude expression. Anushka immediately objected to the way he was speaking to her. Her response is an essential part of the incident: the exchange included a clear boundary from the person at whom the remark was directed.

The clip gained renewed attention in January 2019, during the Hardik Pandya controversy. Viewers shared it while questioning how similar comments by actors and cricketers were received. That later scrutiny became the incident’s most significant public afterlife. ‘Koffee’ clips often return as nostalgia, but this one returned as a criticism of what had previously been accepted as television banter.

9. Twinkle Khanna turned the rapid-fire round back on Karan

Season 5, Episode 2 | Aired: November 13, 2016

Twinkle Khanna arrived with Akshay Kumar and promptly made the host work for his own answers. Asked what Akshay had that the Khans did not, she replied, “Some extra inches.” As Karan reacted to the innuendo, she redirected him and clarified, “I meant his feet”. The exchange worked because she understood the format perfectly: deliver a provocative answer, let the host take the bait, then make his reaction part of the joke. For once, Karan’s question created more trouble for Karan than for his guest.

She also reversed another familiar rapid-fire question by asking him to add Fawad Khan to his list of the coolest Khans and choose for himself. Years later, Twinkle shared a fan-edited compilation that Karan had sent her, laughing at how they had got away with the conversation. Its continued circulation is a reminder that the show’s biggest moments were not always disputes. Sometimes a guest simply knew how to outplay the person holding the question cards.

10. Sara Ali Khan’s Kartik Aaryan crush became a public talking point

Season 6, Episode 5 | Aired: November 18, 2018

Making her debut alongside father Saif Ali Khan, Sara Ali Khan gave a refreshingly uncomplicated answer about the actor she wanted to date: Kartik Aaryan. Saif’s presence made the discussion even more entertaining, with the father-daughter dynamic becoming part of the exchange. Kartik was subsequently asked about the declaration and responded that he found Sara pretty and would like to have coffee with her. A rapid-fire preference had become a conversation taking place across interviews and red carpets.

Their eventual pairing in ‘Love Aaj Kal’ intensified public interest in the equation. In 2022, Karan said they had dated and spoke about the couch’s supposed ability to bring people together. The original televised moment was simply Sara expressing a crush. What made it memorable was the way that answer travelled: from a father-daughter chat to audience enthusiasm, film publicity and years of questions about the two actors.

11. Samantha Ruth Prabhu challenged Karan’s version of marriage

Season 7, Episode 3 | Streamed: July 21, 2022

Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s appearance with Akshay Kumar produced a joke aimed directly at Karan’s filmmaking. She argued that his romantic worlds had marketed unrealistic expectations of marriage, contrasting the glossy family ideal of ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ with the much rougher world of ‘K.G.F.’ The comparison became a widely shared line because it punctured the fantasy using two film titles the audience immediately understood. It also placed the host, briefly, in the position of answering for the expectations his films had helped create.

The conversation also addressed her separation from Naga Chaitanya. When Karan referred to him as her husband, she corrected him to “ex-husband”. Asked about their equation, she used the image of needing to hide sharp objects if they were placed together in a room, while leaving open the possibility that things could become amicable later. Those remarks described her feelings at that time. Their directness made the episode particularly striking, moving between a sharp joke about movie romance and a candid account of life after a relationship ended.

12. Deepika Padukone discussed the early phase of dating Ranveer Singh

Season 8, Episode 1 | Streamed: October 26, 2023

Deepika and Ranveer’s first joint ‘Koffee’ appearance as a married couple was intended as an intimate opening to Season 8. They spoke about their courtship and shared their wedding film publicly for the first time, bringing Karan to tears. Amid that conversation, Deepika explained that she had initially wanted to remain single after difficult relationships. She described an early phase in which they were allowed to see other people but kept returning to each other, before their commitment became settled.

That portion of the conversation prompted extensive trolling, particularly directed at Deepika, as clips circulated separately from the fuller episode. Twinkle Khanna subsequently defended her approach and questioned the reaction. The result was a striking split between what the episode offered and what dominated its aftermath: a wedding film, affectionate recollections and emotional openness were overtaken by arguments about a few lines on dating. It became one of the clearest examples of how a long conversation could acquire a much narrower online identity.

The response to the season opener eventually became a subject on the show itself. During his conversation with Arjun Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur, Karan said the trolling of Deepika and Ranveer had angered him. He described their appearance as one of his most honest and heartfelt episodes and objected to viewers passing sweeping judgments about their personal lives and marriage. He had also addressed trolling during an Instagram Live shortly after the premiere, asking people to keep criticism constructive.

13. Vicky Kaushal’s reaction to Katrina Kaif’s compliment

Season 6 | Katrina’s episode: November 11, 2018 | Vicky’s episode: December 16, 2018

When Katrina said she and Vicky would “look nice” together on screen, nobody watching knew how memorable that answer would become. Karan later relayed the compliment to Vicky, who pretended to faint. After their marriage, Vicky returned in Season 7 and explained that the exchange was when he first realised Katrina even knew he existed; they had never met before it.

14. Shah Rukh Khan addressed his fallout with Salman Khan

Season 3, Episode 9 | Aired: January 2, 2011

Shah Rukh Khan usually knows how to turn a difficult question into a punchline. During this appearance, however, the conversation became more personal. Addressing his strained friendship with Salman Khan following their widely reported fallout at Katrina Kaif’s birthday party in 2008, Shah Rukh accepted responsibility rather than assigning blame. He said that if someone who had loved him was upset with him, the fault lay with him, and offered an apology on Karan’s show.

The conversation resurfaced when Salman made his debut on the couch in December 2013. He said Shah Rukh could have come to his house and resolved matters directly, making clear that a televised apology had not settled the hurt. Yet he also insisted that he did not allow people to badmouth Shah Rukh in front of him. That detail gave the exchange its emotional weight: even while discussing their distance, Salman drew a boundary around how others could speak about his former friend.

The coffee will eventually go cold, but these conversations have a way of resurfacing years later. As ‘Koffee With Karan’ heads into its final season, the couch still has room for a few more moments we’ll be talking about long after the credits roll.
