Bollywood’s biggest two-hero films and how they performed at the box office.

One superstar can sell a film, but two can turn it into an event before the first poster has even landed. Hindi cinema has long understood the appeal of putting major male stars in the same frame – sometimes as brothers, sometimes as best friends and occasionally as rivals who spend three hours trying to outsmart or outpunch each other. When the combination works, each actor gives the other someone worth reacting to. When it does not, even twice the star power cannot rescue the screenplay.

That formula is back in focus as Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan reunited in Priyadarshan’s ‘Haiwaan’, which arrived in cinemas on Friday (September 11). Their first film together since ‘Tashan’ in 2008 is not attempting to recreate the cheerful partnership of their 1990s movies. A Hindi remake of Priyadarshan’s Malayalam thriller ‘Oppam’, it cast Saif as a visually impaired martial artist and Akshay as the psychotic killer hunting him. Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Sharib Hashmi and Rajesh Sharma feature in supporting roles.

‘Haiwaan’ is the pair’s seventh collaboration after ‘Yeh Dillagi’, ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’, ‘Tu Chor Main Sipahi’, ‘Keemat’, ‘Aarzoo’ and ‘Tashan’. It also arrives when equally balanced two-star vehicles have become less common than sprawling cinematic universes. Priyadarshan recently described landing two actors of their stature as a casting coup, arguing that both were secure enough to know they had substantial roles.

Amid their reunion, here is a look at several Bollywood two-hero films – and whether twice the star power translated into twice the box-office joy.

1. Deewaar

Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor did not play a conventional buddy pair in ‘Deewaar’. They became something even more dramatically useful – brothers positioned on opposite sides of the law. Released on January 24, 1975, Yash Chopra’s crime drama cast Big B as dockworker-turned-smuggler Vijay and Shashi Kapoor as police officer Ravi. Nirupa Roy, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, Iftekhar and Madan Puri completed the principal cast, while Salim–Javed supplied the screenplay and dialogues that lived far beyond its theatrical run.

The two-hero construction gave the film its emotional wall: Vijay had the swagger and rage, Ravi carried the badge and moral certainty, and their mother stood between them. The result was a super hit that collected approximately Rs 4.25 crore nett in India – a massive total in 1975 – and cemented Amitabh Bachchan’s Angry Young Man image.

2. Sholay

If Bollywood friendship had an official logo, it would probably be Jai and Veeru sharing a motorcycle. Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’, released on August 15, 1975, placed Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra at the centre of a genre-blending adventure about two small-time criminals recruited by former police officer Thakur Baldev Singh to capture Gabbar Singh. Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan were not ornamental supporting players; each became essential to a film that seemed to manufacture iconic characters by the minute.

The partnership worked because the actors supplied opposite energies. Veeru was loud, impulsive and romantic; Jai was dry, watchful and prepared to let a coin make difficult decisions. According to Sacnilk, ‘Sholay’ earned approximately Rs 15.50 crore nett in India and Rs 50 crore worldwide, becoming an all-time blockbuster.

3. Ram Lakhan

Subhash Ghai’s ‘Ram Lakhan’ arrived on January 27, 1989, and offered two brothers for the price of two completely different films. Jackie Shroff played the composed, dutiful police officer Ram, while Anil Kapoor turned Lakhan into a restless entertainer who could dance to ‘My Name Is Lakhan’ before learning a few painful lessons about ambition. Madhuri Dixit, Dimple Kapadia, Rakhee Gulzar, Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher rounded out a cast overflowing with late-1980s star power.

The film understood that a two-hero vehicle did not require both men to behave alike. Ram provided the emotional ballast; Lakhan supplied the mischief, movement and chartbuster. Their eventual reunion made the revenge drama satisfying rather than merely inevitable. ‘Ram Lakhan’ collected around Rs 9 crore nett in India and was classified as a hit, becoming one of the year’s highest-grossing Hindi films.

4. Saudagar

By the time ‘Saudagar’ opened on August 9, 1991, merely seeing Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar share a frame was an event. Subhash Ghai brought the veterans together more than three decades after ‘Paigham’, casting them as former friends whose bond has curdled into a generational feud. Manisha Koirala and Vivek Mushran made their film debuts as the young lovers caught between the two camps, while Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Gulshan Grover, Mukesh Khanna, Deepti Naval and Jackie Shroff supported the grand melodrama.

This was less a buddy movie than an acting summit conducted through loaded pauses, booming dialogue and wounded pride. Neither veteran existed merely to make the other look powerful; the entire film depended on audiences believing that both men could command their own territory. Sacnilk recorded approximately Rs 8.50 crore nett in India and Rs 15.50 crore worldwide. The film became a major hit and one of 1991’s highest earners.

5. Main Khiladi Tu Anari

Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan’s most enduring early collaboration reached theatres on September 23, 1994. Directed by Sameer Malkan, ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’ followed police inspector Karan Joglekar, played by Akshay, and movie star Deepak Kumar, played by Saif. The actor begins shadowing the officer to prepare for a role, only to turn a serious undercover operation into an unwanted masterclass in method acting. Shilpa Shetty appeared in a double role, with Raageshwari, Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor and Johnny Lever among the supporting cast.

Akshay handled the straight-faced action while Saif gleefully played the glamorous nuisance, establishing the complementary rhythm that made their pairing work. The film earned approximately Rs 7.88 crore nett in India and Rs 13.84 crore worldwide, becoming a hit and one of the year’s leading grossers. Its title song and ‘Chura Ke Dil Mera’ developed lives of their own.

6. Andaz Apna Apna

Aamir Khan and Salman Khan played freeloaders Amar and Prem in ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, two men with the same plan: marry a wealthy heiress and allow money to perform the exhausting task of earning money. Rajkumar Santoshi’s comedy, released on November 4, 1994, also starred Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Shakti Kapoor, Mehmood and Deven Verma. Instead of pairing two capable heroes, the film made both men spectacularly overconfident fools — and discovered comic gold in their competitive uselessness.

The joke took time to land. Sacnilk estimated an original India nett collection of Rs 5.15 crore and a worldwide gross of Rs 7.59 crore. Television, home video and endless repeat viewing eventually reversed the verdict. Amar and Prem became one of Bollywood’s most quoted comic pairings, while Teja, Crime Master Gogo and “Do dost ek cup mein chai piyenge” entered popular culture.

7. Karan Arjun

Rakesh Roshan removed the usual scheduling problem associated with casting Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan together by giving their characters two lifetimes. Released on January 13, 1995, ‘Karan Arjun’ starred the actors as brothers murdered by their scheming uncle Durjan Singh and reincarnated to complete unfinished family business. Rakhee Gulzar delivered the faith, Amrish Puri supplied the villainy, and Kajol, Mamta Kulkarni, Ranjeet and Johnny Lever completed the principal cast.

The film gave both heroes distinct territory — Salman’s Karan brought physical force, while Shah Rukh’s Arjun supplied volatile intensity — before unleashing them together in the revenge-heavy finale. Its 2024 worldwide re-release confirmed that Rakhee was right all along: her sons really would return.

8. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan

Long before Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff inherited the title, Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda turned ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ into double trouble — literally. David Dhawan’s action comedy, released on October 16, 1998, cast both actors in dual roles as police officers and their criminal lookalikes. Raveena Tandon, Ramya Krishnan, Paresh Rawal, Anupam Kher, Sharat Saxena and Satish Kaushik joined the identity-swap chaos, while Madhuri Dixit and Raveena made the title song feel like a separate festival.

The film had to compete directly with ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, which opened on the same day, but it refused to disappear quietly. Bollywood Hungama recorded approximately Rs 19.19 crore nett in India and Rs 28.84 crore worldwide, while Box Office India classified it as a hit. Amitabh supplied towering straight-faced authority, Govinda brought his elastic comic timing, and the doppelgängers allowed both to become even more ridiculous.

9. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi

In ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar did not battle over kingdoms, criminal empires or national security. They fought for Priyanka Chopra’s affection, and Akshay’s Sunny treated the contest like an Olympic event in psychological sabotage. Released on July 30, 2004, David Dhawan’s comedy also featured Amrish Puri, Kader Khan, Satish Shah, Rajpal Yadav and Amrita Arora, with cricketers appearing during its memorably chaotic climax.

Salman’s short-tempered Sameer was the designated romantic hero, but Akshay received the licence to stroll into scenes, create a disaster and leave smiling. 10. Dhoom

The title may have promised speed, but ‘Dhoom’ was really powered by the collision between Abhishek Bachchan’s disciplined police officer Jai Dixit and John Abraham’s ice-cool biker-thief Kabir. Sanjay Gadhvi’s action thriller, released on August 27, 2004, also starred Uday Chopra as Jai’s motor-mouthed assistant Ali, alongside Esha Deol and Rimi Sen. Kabir and his gang carried out precision robberies on motorcycles, while Jai attempted to catch criminals who were always one accelerated gear ahead of the police.

John’s villain was so stylish that the audience occasionally appeared to forget it was supposed to support the policeman chasing him. Abhishek supplied the serious centre, John became the franchise’s first headline-making antagonist and Uday provided the comic release between chases. The gamble paid off: ‘Dhoom’ collected approximately Rs 31.60 crore nett in India and Rs 47.70 crore worldwide.

11. Partner

David Dhawan’s ‘Partner’, released on July 20, 2007, paired Salman Khan’s supremely confident love guru Prem with Govinda’s spectacularly accident-prone Bhaskar. Prem agrees to help Bhaskar win the affection of his wealthy boss Priya, played by Katrina Kaif, while Lara Dutta stars as the woman who makes the romance expert confront a few complications of his own. Rajpal Yadav, Suresh Menon and Dalip Tahil joined a comedy constructed around one very simple pleasure: allowing Govinda to interrupt Salman’s composure as frequently as possible.

Salman played the straight-faced charmer, but he also understood that the funniest thing he could do was give Govinda room to detonate. Their contrasting styles turned a familiar romantic premise into a proper two-star comedy, with ‘Do You Wanna Partner’ announcing its intentions in case anyone had missed them. The film collected approximately Rs 60.05 crore nett in India and Rs 99.64 crore worldwide.

12. Dostana

Tarun Mansukhani’s ‘Dostana’, released on November 14, 2008, placed Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham in Miami, where their characters pretend to be a couple so they can share an apartment with Priyanka Chopra’s Neha. The arrangement becomes considerably less convenient when both fall for her. Kirron Kher, Bobby Deol and Boman Irani joined the comedy, while Vishal–Shekhar’s soundtrack gave Priyanka the enduring ‘Desi Girl’ crown.

Abhishek did much of the broad comic lifting; John played the comparatively controlled half of the fabricated couple and contributed a pair of yellow trunks that received almost as much publicity as the cast. The film’s treatment of g*y identity has attracted more critical scrutiny with time, but it was unusual for a mainstream 2008 production to place the idea at the centre of its plot. Bollywood Hungama recorded Rs 44.38 crore nett in India and Rs 82.86 crore worldwide.

13. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai

Milan Luthria’s ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’, released on July 30, 2010, turned the changing face of Mumbai’s underworld into a duel between two generations. Ajay Devgn played Sultan Mirza, an old-school smuggler who operates by his own code, while Emraan Hashmi’s ambitious Shoaib Khan regards that code as an obstacle waiting to be removed. Kangana Ranaut, Prachi Desai and Randeep Hooda completed the principal cast, with the story loosely drawing from the rise of organised crime in the city during the 1970s.

The film worked because Ajay and Emraan were not competing for the same acting space. Ajay made stillness look like authority; Emraan made impatience feel dangerous. Shoaib’s journey from admirer to challenger gradually transformed the film from a gangster chronicle into a succession battle, and their eventual confrontation supplied its real fireworks. It collected approximately Rs 55.47 crore nett in India and Rs 82.13 crore worldwide according to Bollywood Hungama.

14. Desi Boyz

Akshay Kumar and John Abraham reunited after ‘Garam Masala’, but ‘Desi Boyz’ replaced duelling photographers and romantic confusion with recession-era panic. Rohit Dhawan’s directorial debut, released on November 25, 2011, cast them as London friends Jerry and Nick, who lose their jobs and begin working as male escorts. Deepika Padukone, Chitrangda Singh, Anupam Kher and Omi Vaidya played key roles, while Sanjay Dutt appeared as the spectacularly named Mr Khalnayak.

The film understood the visual appeal of its title pair and built an entire nightclub act around it, but the screenplay kept separating the men to manage their romances and personal crises. That diluted some of the buddy-film electricity promised by the marketing. ‘Desi Boyz’ collected approximately Rs 42.40 crore nett in India and Rs 77.66 crore worldwide.

15. Gunday

Ali Abbas Zafar’s ‘Gunday’ opened on February 14, 2014, and decided that Valentine’s Day needed coal thefts, flying punches and two men treating friendship like a full-contact sport. Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor played Bikram and Bala, refugees who grow into powerful Calcutta outlaws before both fall for cabaret performer Nandita, played by Priyanka Chopra. Irrfan Khan supplied the calmly observant lawman determined to dismantle their empire, with Saurabh Shukla and Pankaj Tripathi also appearing.

Ranveer and Arjun attacked the film with matching enthusiasm, turning every sprint, fight and dance routine into a competition neither intended to lose. Their off-screen promotional chemistry helped sell the bromance, while Irrfan’s quiet authority provided a welcome counterweight to all the flying coal dust. ‘Gunday’ earned approximately Rs 78.60 crore nett in India and Rs 130.91 crore worldwide.

16. War

Siddharth Anand’s ‘War’ did not hide its selling point. It introduced Tiger Shroff’s agent Khalid, sent him after his rogue mentor Kabir and then allowed Hrithik Roshan to emerge from a helicopter in slow motion —just in case anyone remained undecided about buying a ticket. Released on October 2, 2019, the action thriller also starred Vaani Kapoor, Ashutosh Rana, Anupriya Goenka and Soni Razdan.

The casting worked because the film used the actors’ similarities as competitive fuel. Both could dance, fight and sprint through elaborately designed action sequences, but Hrithik brought veteran-star command while Tiger played the younger man desperate to earn his approval. The result remains the biggest commercial success on this list in nominal terms: ‘War’ collected approximately Rs 318.01 crore nett in India and Rs 475.62 crore worldwide, becoming a blockbuster and the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2019.

17. Vikram Vedha

Three years after ‘War’, Hrithik Roshan entered another two-hero face-off, this time opposite Saif Ali Khan. Pushkar and Gayatri’s ‘Vikram Vedha’, released on September 30, 2022, remade their acclaimed 2017 Tamil thriller with Saif as encounter specialist Vikram and Hrithik as gangster Vedha. Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf, Yogita Bihani, Sharib Hashmi and Satyadeep Mishra filled out a story inspired by the Vikram–Betaal folktale.

This was not a film in which the heroes joined forces after a few obligatory misunderstandings. Its pleasure lay in watching Vedha tell stories designed to corrupt Vikram’s certainty about good and evil. Both stars received substantial material, and Hrithik’s deliberately unruly performance played effectively against Saif’s clenched discipline. The box office, however, remained far less impressed than many reviewers. The film earned approximately Rs 78.66 crore nett in India and Rs 135.03 crore worldwide, falling short of expectations attached to its reported cost and star pairing.

18. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan

The 2024 ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ borrowed the title — but not the plot — from Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda’s 1998 hit. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and released on April 11, 2024, the action spectacle teamed Akshay Kumar’s veteran soldier Freddy with Tiger Shroff’s younger operative Rocky. Prithviraj Sukumaran played the masked antagonist, while Manushi Chhillar, Alaya F, Sonakshi Sinha and Ronit Bose Roy appeared in key roles.

On paper, the combination appeared almost laboratory-designed for a two-hero action film: Akshay brought experience and comic timing, while Tiger supplied acrobatics and youth. The finished film offered scale, explosions and banter, but audiences did not remain interested long enough to justify its enormous reported cost. Bollywood Hungama recorded approximately Rs 59.17 crore nett in India and Rs 102.16 crore worldwide.

Honourable Mentions

Several other films could easily extend this roll call. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan gave Hindi cinema two dramatically different but enduring partnerships in ‘Anand’ and ‘Namak Haraam’, while Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor anchored the bruising brotherhood of ‘Parinda’. Akshay Kumar and John Abraham generated inspired disorder in the hit comedy ‘Garam Masala’; Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna traded betrayal after betrayal in ‘Race’; and Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan carried Rohit Shetty’s ‘Bol Bachchan’ past the Rs 100 crore nett mark in India.

Kartik Aaryan and Sunny Singh turned male friendship into the fiercely contested heart of the super hit ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’, while Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan’s clash made ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ a blockbuster. The ‘Dhoom’ sequels also kept reinventing the two-star face-off by placing Abhishek opposite Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan — even if Uday Chopra’s Ali was always nearby, ensuring that the franchise was never strictly a two-man operation.

‘Haiwaan’ now gives the two-hero formula another interesting twist. Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan are no longer the cop and intrusive movie star of ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’; they are predator and target, using three decades of familiarity to play enemies. Whether the reunion becomes another winning chapter or merely an enjoyable piece of 1990s nostalgia will be decided after September 11.
