YouTuber and ‘Bigg Boss OTT 2’ winner Elvish Yadav has landed in controversy after making derogatory remarks against actress and ‘Bigg Boss 18’ fame Chum Darang. His comments, mocking Chum’s name, ethnicity and career during a podcast, sparked outrage, leading to the National Commission for Women (NCW) summoning him. As per a News18 report, he has been asked to appear on February 17. The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) also condemned his remarks, calling them an insult to all women from the Northeast and urging strict action against him.

Chum Darang also strongly reacted, emphasizing the need to draw a line between humour and hate.

The controversy began when Elvish Yadav, during a podcast appearance with Rajat Dalal, mocked Chum Darang’s name and ethnicity. He also made derogatory remarks about her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s hit film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ while joking about her.

“Karanveer ko pakka COVID tha kyunki Chum kisi ko kaise pasand aati hai bhai, itna taste kiska kharab hota hai! Aur Chum ke toh naam mein hi ashleelta hai… Naam Chum aur kaam Gangubai Kathiawadi mein kiya hai,” Elvish Yadav had said.

His statements immediately triggered massive outrage on social media. People called out his insensitivity, and the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) strongly condemned his remarks. In a letter to the NCW chairperson, APSCW chairperson Kenjum Pakam criticized Elvish for insulting not just Chum Darang but also women across Northeast India. The commission urged authorities to take strict action against him as per the law.

Chum Darang, deeply hurt by the comments, took to social media to express her disappointment. Without mentioning Elvish’s name, she stated that mocking someone’s identity and achievements under the guise of humour is unacceptable.

She wrote, “Disrespecting someone’s identity and name is not ‘fun.’ Mocking someone’s achievements is not ‘banter.’ It’s time we draw the line between humor and hate. What’s even more disappointing is that this wasn’t just about my ethnicity—my hard work and a film backed by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali were also disrespected.”

Despite the backlash, Elvish Yadav initially dismissed the issue. In a vlog, he attempted to downplay his comments by saying, "Toh maine kholke dekha maine kahi kya racist remarks pass kare hain? Maine Chum ke upar kuch bol rakha tha. Waise maine kaha maine bola ya nahi, hatao, mujhe negativity chahiye hi nahi. Agar maan lo kisiko kharab lag raha hai mere bolne se, toh bhai, wo part maine remove kar diya."

However, his response did little to calm the outrage, with many criticising him for failing to acknowledge his mistake or issue a sincere apology.
