Nana Patekar's Funeral To Be Held In Pune, Actor To Be Cremated With Full State Honours

Veteran actor Nana Patekar, one of the most distinctive and respected performers in Indian cinema, died at the age of 75 on Thursday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. Nana Patekar was rushed to Manipal Hospital after he was found unresponsive, but doctors were unable to revive him. Dr Shekhar Salkar said the actor was brought to the hospital without signs of life and underwent around 45 minutes of CPR and cardiac massage. A medico-legal case has been registered, with a postmortem to be conducted at Goa Medical College before his mortal remains are handed over to the family.

The Maharashtra government has announced that Nana Patekar will be cremated with full state honours. Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar said the decision recognises the actor's immense contribution to Marathi theatre and both Marathi and Hindi cinema.

"Considering the unparalleled contribution of actor Nana Patekar to Marathi plays as well as Marathi and Hindi cinema, we have decided to conduct his last rites with full state honors,” Ashish Shelar wrote on X.

According to reports, Nana Patekar's last rites are expected to be held at his farmhouse in the Donje area of Pune. The venue has also been associated with his work beyond films, particularly his involvement in social initiatives.

Nana Patekar's career began with 'Gaman' in 1978, but it was his ability to bring intensity, vulnerability and an unmistakable individuality to his performances that eventually made him one of Indian cinema's most recognisable actors. Films such as 'Parinda', 'Krantiveer', 'Prahaar: The Final Attack', 'Khamoshi: The Musical', 'Ab Tak Chhappan' and 'Welcome' showcased different facets of his acting.

Even in the later stages of his career, Nana Patekar remained active. His recent credits included 'The Vaccine War', the Marathi film 'Ole Aale', 'Vanvaas', 'Housefull 5' and 'O'Romeo'. He also made a special appearance in 'Subedaar', sharing the screen with his former 'Welcome' co-star Anil Kapoor.

Nana Patekar's work was not restricted to films. He remained closely connected to theatre and Marathi culture and also became known for his social work. Through Naam Foundation, he was involved in initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and addressing issues affecting rural communities. His contribution to the arts earned him some of India's most significant honours. Nana Patekar received three National Film Awards and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013. His trophy cabinet also included Filmfare honours, Maharashtra State Film Awards and Filmfare Awards Marathi.

Beyond the awards and the memorable characters, Nana Patekar leaves behind a body of work that helped redefine what a leading actor could look and sound like on the Indian screen. His career crossed genres and languages without losing the rawness and individuality that made him instantly recognisable.
