'The Weeknd' has dropped his stage name now, and he has changed it to his birth name 'Abel Tesfaye' on social media.

Recently, singing sensation 'The Weeknd' had hinted that he is looking to retire his stage name. “I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” The Weeknd had said in his interview with W Magazine. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close The Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn," he added. Now, in the latest entertainment news, the singer has dropped his moniker on Twitter and Instagram in favour of his birth name, Abel Tesfaye.

Tesfaye might have changed his name on social media handles, however, his account username remains 'The Weeknd' on both Twitter and Instagram.

However, it is not known whether the singer has decided to disown his stage name, or if this is a timely promotion ahead of his HBO show 'The Idol' premiere.

The premiere date for HBO's music-drama 'The Idol' was revealed earlier, and the show will premiere on June 4. For the unversed, the show stars Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp.

The show will tell the story of how Lily Rose-Depp's character is determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest pop star in America.

'The Idol' has been made by the creators of another HBO smash-hit 'Euphoria' starring Zendaya.

The show has also been created by Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson.

The principal photography for the show began in November 2021 in and around Los Angeles, California.

The production was temporarily paused in April 2022 due to The Weeknd co-headlining the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with Swedish House Mafia on short notice.
