Kareena Kapoor, who is celebrating her birthday today, recently stunned in an original Vicky Tiel couture gown from 1987, a vintage creation with serious fashion history. Taking to Instagram, filmmaker and stylist Rhea Kapoor shared jaw-dropping photos of the Bollywood diva in the red number.

Crafted from the designer’s signature ruched stretch mesh, the strapless gown came in a rich deep merlot red rather than a bright scarlet. Its sculpted sweetheart neckline framed the décolletage, while built-in corsetry created a sharply defined, figure-hugging waist. Fine ruching swept horizontally across the bust before reappearing around the hips, where the fabric gathered into a knot-like detail and fell into a long draped panel. The floor-length skirt remained fluid and relatively clean, allowing the corseted construction and strategic draping to create the drama.

The gown is particularly special because it predates and inspired the celebrated red-dress aesthetic associated with Julia Roberts in ‘Pretty Woman’. Kareena’s stylist Rhea Kapoor revealed that she wore the original Vicky Tiel Couture 1987 piece, later adapted for Roberts’ iconic character. Instead of modernising the vintage gown with excessive accessories, the styling wisely leaned into its unapologetic late-1980s glamour.
Jewellery amplified the colour story beautifully. Kareena Kapoor wore an extraordinary 75 carats of Burmese rubies from Amrapali Jewels, arranged in a close-fitting necklace interspersed with sparkling stones. The red gemstones echoed the merlot gown without competing with it. She skipped earrings altogether and added a statement ring, keeping the bare shoulders and sweetheart neckline firmly in focus.
Her beauty look completed the vintage mood. Kareena Kapoor wore her dark hair open and sleek, with a centre part and softly curved ends. Bronzed, luminous skin was paired with softly defined eyes, winged liner, groomed brows and a deep red-wine lip that mirrored the gown.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Kareena Kapoor can be currently seen in Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Daayra’. Co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, the movie released in cinemas on September 18. It has so far collected Rs 4.64 crore in India, as per Sacnilk.
