Karan Johar revealed that he had a major bout of depression this year in April during the NMACC launch.

'Koffee With Karan' season 8 is out and the first episode saw Karan Johar chatting with popular Bollywood couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. This episode was unlike any other 'Koffee With Karan' episodes as the trio of Deepika Padukone, Karan Johar and Ranveer Singh indulged in some deep conversations about relationships, mental health and life in general. For the unversed, Deepika Padukone has been a vocal advocate for mental health, and during the episode, she was asked about her own experience with depression. This conversation led to Karan Johar opening up on his own struggles.

The filmmaker revealed that he suffered a major bout of depression this year in April during the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre launch (NMACC).

“I think there were three tough years of the pandemic and there was trolling and I didn't realise that I was trying to be tough and resilient and brush things under the carpet," said Karan Johar. The 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' director then recalled the NMACC episode.

“The legit attack I had was at the NMACC launch,” he said as Ranveer exclaimed, “What?”

“I remember Varun (Dhawan) was staring at me. I was sweating, I didn't even realise. He came to me, held my hand and asked ‘Are you okay?’ And my hands were shaking," said Karan Johar.

“I got out of my long and elaborate jacket and I left in half an hour. I just went to my bed and I wept. I just cried and I didn't know why I was crying," he added. Karan Johar then went on to say that he then consulted his psychologist, who put him on medication.

Deepika Padukone also opened up on her experience with depression. She revealed that Ranveer Singh stood by her side patiently even as he "felt helpless".

Ranveer Singh revealed that it took him a long time to understand what Deepika Padukone was going through and recalled an incident from 2014 when Deepika called him during one of his shoots and said, “I have had a blackout and I have had a fall can you come home?’ And it was literally like, I am coming.”

“When I went and saw her, something wasn’t right. She wasn’t all there. I knew this was a very serious problem when at breakfast one day, she was sitting across from me and she was just crying and there were just tears, copious tears flowing down and at a human level, the most basic question is ‘kya hua baby?’ and she also doesn’t know what to say. She said ‘I don’t know’,” he said.

He added that he felt “helpless” in the moment and eventually called her parents.

For the unversed, Deepika is a founder 'Live Love Laugh' foundation which works towards spreading awareness of mental health.
