Kiran Rao's ‘Laapataa Ladies’ Outperforms Sandeep Reddy Vanga's ‘Animal’ On Netflix. Details Inside
Kiran Rao’s ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is performing better than Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’ on Netflix.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of OTT platforms and cinema, one truth remains steadfast: content is king. The quality, variety, and originality of content have now become the defining factors that attract viewers. And one recent Hindi movie that seems to have found its audience on OTT is Kiran Rao’s ‘Laapataa Ladies’. The movie, backed by Bollywood star Aamir Khan, released in cinemas in March 2024. Despite critical acclaim, the film didn’t perform well at the box office. ‘Laapataa Ladies’ was later released on Netflix. With its digital release, the film got all the love it deserved.
Starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam, among others, the comedy drama film is set in rural India, revolving around the chaos and confusion that ensues when two young brides go missing on a train journey. The story is a perfect blend of humour and poignant social commentary, highlighting various issues prevalent in rural Indian society.
And now, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has outperformed Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’ on Netflix. It looks like Kiran Rao had the last laugh over Sandeep Reddy Vanga after their battle a few months ago. This comes after Kiran Rao faced some unsavoury comments made by Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
As reported by Binged, ‘Laapataa Ladies’, which debuted on Netflix a month ago, has since accumulated 13.8 million views. ‘Animal’ debuted on Netflix in January 2024, and accumulated nearly 13.6 million views in the first three weeks before dropping out of the top 10 in week four.
However, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has not yet surpassed Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Fighter’, which has 14 million views.
A Reddit user also shared the news of ‘Laapataa Ladies’ beating ‘Animal’ on Netflix.

“Its become very popular in the UK. All my local friends loved it. They have only watched movies like Bahubali. So proud when they talk about Laapata ladies,” one of the users wrote.
“That’s good. This movie deserves all the attention,” added another user.
For the unversed, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is a low-budget film, whereas Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’ is a big-budget, controversial action film.
Interestingly, the news of ‘Laapataa Ladies’ surpassing ‘Animal’ on Netflix comes months after the verbal battle between Kiran Rao and Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
Kiran Rao addressed the misogyny in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films in an interview in November, to which Sandeep Reddy Vanga responded by highlighting similar issues in her ex-husband Aamir Khan’s film ‘Dil’.
He addressed her in an interview with Dainik Bhaskar as “that woman”. Responding to his comments, Kiran Rao told The Quint, “I haven’t commented on Mr Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films because I have not seen them. I have often spoken on misogyny and the representation of women on screen, and I have talked about it on various platforms and at various times. But I have never taken the name of any film because it is not really about the specific films, it is about the issues. I will continue to speak on these issues. So, why Mr Vanga Reddy has assumed that I am talking about his film, you will have to ask him.”
