“Very Dejected”: Juhi Chawla Recalls SRK’s Gypsy Was Taken Away As He Couldn’t Pay EMI. Watch
Juhi Chawla recently spoke about Shah Rukh Khan’s early days in Bollywood. She recalled how his car was once taken away from him.
Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, who also happen to be close friends and co-own the Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have worked together in several movies. Their friendship dates back to the early 90s when they filmed their first movie together ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’ in 1992. Juhi Chawla and SRK’s bond continued to strengthen over the years, making them one of Bollywood's most beloved on-screen pairs as they delivered memorable movies together like ‘Ram Jaane’, ‘Darr’, ‘Yess Boss’, ‘Duplicate’ and ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’.
Recently, Juhi Chawla shared an interesting anecdote about Shah Rukh Khan's early days in Bollywood.
Speaking on stage at an event held in Gujarat, Juhi Chawla said, “I remember Shah Rukh during those days… he had no home in Mumbai. So, he used to come from Delhi (his hometown) and of course, there was nobody to cook for him. I am not sure where he stayed. Unit ka khaana khaate the, unit ki plate mein. Unit ki chai peete the. Aur unit ke saath ekdum matlab ghul mil ke, hassi mazaak, baatein karna.”
She added, “He had one car. It was a Gypsy. I remember it was a black Gypsy. He used to do two-three shifts. Humare saath ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’ kar rahe the and I think ‘Dil Aashna Hai’ kar rahe the and then he was doing another film with Divya (Bharti). He used to be working round the clock and he was really driven. For some reason, he had not been able to pay for his car ya EMI nahi di thi. Kuch ho gaya tha and his car got taken away and he had nothing.”
“That day he came very dejected to the sets. I don’t know, I must’ve said, ‘Arree koi baat nahi, you’ll have many more cars. They’ll just come, you just see. Don’t worry. It’s nothing.’ He still remembers it. Now look at him. Look at where he’s gone,” Juhi Chawla further said.

For the unversed, Shah Rukh Khan owns a bunch of luxury cars today and has a sea-facing bungalow named ‘Mannat’ in Bandra, Mumbai.
Apart from starring in several movies together and co-owning KKR, Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan had also founded a production house, Dreamz Unlimited, in early 2000s with Aziz Mirza. However, Shah Rukh later started his own studio, Red Chillies Entertainment.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Shah Rukh Khan will next seen in ‘King’, co-starring his daughter Suhana Khan who made her acting debut with Zoya Akhtar’s 2023 movie ‘The Archies’.
Juhi Chawla, on the other hand, was last seen in the 2023 show ‘The Railway Men’.
