The rise of OTT (Over-the-Top) platforms in India has been remarkable, transforming the entertainment landscape forever. With increasing internet penetration in the country thanks to the affordable data plans, platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5, Sony Liv and others have gained immense popularity. These services offer a diverse range of content, from movies and series to documentaries, catering to varied tastes. The convenience that streaming services offer has also challenged traditional television, providing viewers flexibility in choosing what, when, and where to watch. Original Indian content, coupled with international productions, has fueled the OTT boom, creating a competitive and dynamic industry that continues to evolve every day.

Additionally, the increase of smartphones, laptops and smart TVs has played a pivotal role in the success of OTT platforms, making entertainment accessible to a broader audience. The rise of regional content in multiple languages has also further expanded the reach, resonating with more people across the country.

The concept of binge-watching has also become a staple now, with entire seasons of shows released at once, encouraging prolonged engagement on streaming platforms. Moreover, the personalised recommendation algorithms used by these platforms enhance user experience, ensuring that viewers discover content tailored to their preferences and likes.

It also gives more creative freedom to the makers as it offers nuanced narratives that may not fit the conventional molds of mainstream cinema.

The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a major catalyst for the boom of OTT platforms in India. With lockdowns and restrictions limiting outdoor activities in the country, there was a surge in demand for at-home entertainment. As remote work and online education became the norm amid the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals increasingly turned to streaming platforms during leisure hours.

OTT platforms became a source of entertainment for people seeking diverse content to lessen the monotony of staying within the four walls of their house.

The closure of theatres during COVID-19 pandemic also led to a direct-to-digital release trend for many Indian films, with producers opting for OTT platforms to reach viewers. This shift not only ensured the continuity of the entertainment industry but also allowed the audience to enjoy new releases from the safety of their homes amid the health crises.

While the surge in OTT consumption during the pandemic was substantial, its long-term impact remains significant even in the post-pandemic era, establishing streaming services as an integral part of the entertainment landscape in India.

Original content production has become a key strategy for OTT platforms in India. Streaming services are investing heavily in creating high-quality, locally relevant shows and movies, featuring popular stars.

With the cinematic landscape constantly evolving with technology, Bollywood stars are also increasingly recognising the reach of digital platforms. Over the years, many Bollywood stars including Saif Ali Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sushmita Sen, Manoj Bajpayee, Vidya Balan and more, made their digital debut.

2023 witnessed more leading Bollywood stars making their OTT debut. This shift is not only reflecting the changing dynamics of the entertainment industry but has also opened up new avenues for storytelling.
