It hardly feels possible, but some of the most rewatched, quoted and memed Hindi films are turning 20 in 2026. The year 2006 offered an unusually rich mix of large-scale spectacles, socially conscious dramas, unconventional romances, comedies and thrillers. It gave Bollywood its first major home-grown superhero franchise, transformed Hrithik Roshan into a master thief, made “Gandhigiri” part of everyday conversation and introduced Kangana Ranaut to the big screen. While some of these films became immediate blockbusters, others gradually acquired cult status through television, streaming and internet culture.

From ‘Krrish’ and ‘Dhoom 2’ to ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Don’, ‘Omkara’ and ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, here are 20 memorable Bollywood films completing two decades in 2026:

1. Krrish

Released on June 23, 2006, Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Krrish’ starred Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Naseeruddin Shah, Rekha and Sharat Saxena. A sequel to ‘Koi... Mil Gaya’, the film followed Krishna, Rohit Mehra’s superhuman son, who grew up under his grandmother’s protective care. After following Priya to Singapore, he assumed the masked identity of Krrish and crossed paths with scientist Dr Siddhant Arya, who was concealing a major secret about his family. Released when superhero spectacles were still rare in mainstream Hindi cinema, ‘Krrish’ combined science fiction, romance and action to create a distinctly Indian hero. It became a blockbuster and earned approximately Rs 121 crore worldwide, laying the foundation for one of Bollywood’s biggest franchises.

2. Dhoom 2

Hrithik Roshan underwent another dramatic transformation in ‘Dhoom 2’, playing Aryan, an elusive international thief who used disguises and elaborate plans to steal priceless objects. Directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, ‘Dhoom 2’ was released on November 24, 2006. It also featured Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Uday Chopra. Police officer Jai Dixit and his partner Ali pursued Hrithik’s character across countries, while Sunehri infiltrated Aryan’s life on behalf of the authorities before unexpectedly falling in love with him. 3. Don

Farhan Akhtar reimagined Amitabh Bachchan’s 1978 classic with Shah Rukh Khan playing both feared criminal Don and his apparent lookalike, Vijay. ‘Don’, which released on October 20, 2006, also starred Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal, Boman Irani, Isha Koppikar and Om Puri. After Don is injured during a police operation, DCP D’Silva recruits Vijay to infiltrate the criminal’s gang. The plan falls apart when the officer dies, leaving Vijay with no one who can verify his identity. Priyanka brought physicality and determination to Roma, while Boman Irani played a crucial role in the deception. The stylish action thriller’s famous final twist separated it from a straightforward remake and paved the way for ‘Don 2’. It earned approximately Rs 104.64 crore worldwide.

4. Lage Raho Munna Bhai

Released on September 1, 2006, Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ featured Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Jimmy Sheirgill and Dia Mirza. Munna pretends to be a history professor to impress radio jockey Jahnavi but soon begins seeing and conversing with Mahatma Gandhi. These encounters inspire him to use truth and non-violence instead of intimidation, an approach he calls “Gandhigiri”. 5. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

Set in New York, ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ explored marital dissatisfaction and infidelity through two troubled couples. The Karan Johar directorial arrived in theatres on August 11, 2006, with Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan and Kirron Kher leading its ensemble cast. The film revolved around Dev, a resentful former footballer married to successful magazine editor Rhea. The movie also focused on Maya, who feels emotionally disconnected from her affectionate husband Rishi. Dev and Maya form a deep bond that eventually turns into an affair, leaving both marriages shattered. 6. Fanaa

‘Fanaa’ brought Aamir Khan and Kajol together for the first time in lead roles. Released on May 26, 2006, the movie was directed by Kunal Kohli and also starred Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Tabu and Ali Haji. Kajol played Zooni, a visually impaired Kashmiri woman who falls in love with charming tour guide Rehan during a trip to Delhi. 8. Phir Hera Pheri

Released on June 9, 2006, Neeraj Vora’s ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ starred Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Bipasha Basu, Rimi Sen, Johnny Lever and Rajpal Yadav. Raju, Shyam and Baburao begin the sequel as wealthy men after the events of ‘Hera Pheri’, but their desire to multiply their riches makes them easy targets for con woman Anuradha. The comedy thriller revolved around an Indian theatre group travelling to London without its leading actress. Actors Bunty and Babla are tasked with finding a replacement, but their search pulls them into a confusing web involving drugs, a mysterious woman, murder and several criminals. 10. Vivah

Sooraj R Barjatya’s ‘Vivah’ was released on November 10, 2006, and featured Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao, Alok Nath, Anupam Kher and Seema Biswas. The romantic drama followed Prem and Poonam’s journey from an arranged engagement to marriage, focusing on their gradual emotional connection and the bond between their families. Their commitment is tested when Poonam is severely injured in a fire shortly before their wedding. ‘Vivah’ grew through strong word of mouth and emerged as a hit. 11. Gangster: A Love Story

Released on April 28, 2006, Anurag Basu’s ‘Gangster: A Love Story’ marked Kangana Ranaut’s Bollywood debut and also starred Emraan Hashmi, Shiney Ahuja and Gulshan Grover. Kangana played Simran, an alcoholic living in Seoul and struggling with memories of her relationship with fugitive gangster Daya. After wealthy casino owner Sonia Chang is found murdered at her mansion, investigating officer Karan encounters several eccentric suspects, each possessing a possible motive. 13. Golmaal: Fun Unlimited

Rohit Shetty’s ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimited’ hit theatres on July 14, 2006, and brought together Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Rimi Sen and Paresh Rawal. The comedy followed four mischievous friends – Gopal, Madhav, Lucky and Laxman – who take refuge in the home of a blind elderly couple. To remain there, they pretend to be the couple’s grandson, with one friend acting as his body and another supplying his voice. Their already precarious deception becomes more complicated when criminals searching for hidden treasure arrive. 14. Omkara

Released on July 28, 2006, Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Omkara’ featured Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Bipasha Basu and Naseeruddin Shah. Vishal Bhardwaj relocated Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ to the criminal and political landscape of Uttar Pradesh. When powerful enforcer Omkara selects Kesu instead of Langda Tyagi as his successor, a furious Langda manipulates him into believing that his lover Dolly has been unfaithful. 15. Khosla Ka Ghosla

Dibakar Banerjee made his directorial debut with ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, which was released on September 22, 2006, and starred Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Parvin Dabas, Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey and Tara Sharma. The comedy drama followed middle-class Delhi resident Kamal Kishore Khosla, who discovers that his newly purchased plot has been illegally occupied by influential property dealer Kishan Khurana. J.P. Dutta’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ was released on November 3, 2006, and starred Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Suniel Shetty and Divya Dutta. Adapted from Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s Urdu novel ‘Umrao Jaan Ada’, the period drama followed Amiran, a young girl who is abducted and sold to a Lucknow brothel. 17. Malamaal Weekly

Released on March 10, 2006, Priyadarshan’s ‘Malamaal Weekly’ featured Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav, Arbaaz Khan, Asrani and Shakti Kapoor. The comedy centred on lottery-ticket seller Lilaram, who discovers that one of his customers has won a massive jackpot. When the winner is found dead, Lilaram tries to claim the prize, but more villagers learn the truth and demand a share. The conspiracy soon becomes an escalating farce involving a corpse, constant lies and greedy neighbours. Made on a reported budget of around Rs 6 crore, the film grossed approximately Rs 41.70 crore worldwide and emerged as a major commercial success. 18. Jaan-E-Mann

Released on October 20, 2006, ‘Jaan-E-Mann’ marked Shirish Kunder’s directorial debut and starred Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Preity Zinta and Anupam Kher. The romantic musical followed Suhaan, a struggling actor who receives a divorce notice from his estranged wife Piya. Hoping to avoid paying substantial alimony, he encourages Piya’s former college admirer Agastya to win her over. The plan becomes emotionally complicated when Suhaan realises that he still loves his wife. Released opposite SRK’s ‘Don’, the film failed commercially despite earning approximately Rs 45 crore worldwide. 19. Taxi No. 9211

Milan Luthria’s ‘Taxi No. 9211’ was released on February 24, 2006, and starred Nana Patekar, John Abraham and Sameera Reddy. Set against the frantic energy of Mumbai, the film brought together Raghav, a temperamental taxi driver hiding his real profession from his wife, and Jai, an arrogant heir trying to secure his late father’s fortune. A disagreement during a taxi journey escalates into a destructive battle in which both men threaten the other’s livelihood, family and future. Driven by Nana and John’s volatile chemistry, the comedy thriller stood apart from the year’s larger spectacles. It became a moderate commercial success and earned approximately Rs 31.55 crore worldwide.

20. Chup Chup Ke

Released on June 9, 2006, Priyadarshan’s ‘Chup Chup Ke’ starred Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Neha Dhupia, Suniel Shetty, Om Puri and Anupam Kher. Burdened by debt, Jeetu attempts to fake his death so his family can claim insurance money. After fishermen Gundya and Bandya rescue him, he pretends to be unable to hear or speak to conceal his identity. He is subsequently taken to a wealthy Gujarati household, where he develops a bond with Shruti, who is herself unable to speak.
