SYNOPSIS

Barah Aana is a critically acclaimed 2009 Indian black comedy drama film written and directed by Raja Krishna Menon. The title refers to the old pre-decimalization Indian currency unit where 12 aanas equaled 3/4 of a Rupee (75 paise), which serves as a metaphor for the small costs of dignity and debts that the working-class characters face.

Synopsis

Set in a globalized, fast-paced Mumbai, the movie explores the lives of three underpaid, working-class roommates who share a small room and struggle to make ends meet.

The trio consists of Shukla (a stoic, older driver), Yadav (a mischievous but constantly bullied security guard), and Aman (a young, ambitious waiter). Their mundane lives take a drastic turn when Yadav faces a financial crisis—needing cash to send home for his ailing son—and gets pushed around at work. Through a sudden sequence of chance events, Yadav accidentally stumbles into a petty crime that turns out to be surprisingly easy money.

Realizing they can demand small ransoms by kidnapping middle-class men without attracting heavy police attention, Yadav convinces his roommates to join him. While the quick cash temporarily boosts their lifestyles and self-confidence, the cat-and-mouse games soon spiral heavily out of control, shifting their personalities and dragging them down a dark path they never intended to take.
