Naseeruddin Shah was born on July 20, 1950, in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. He belongs to a distinguished family; his brother, Zameerud-din Shah, is a retired Lieutenant General of the Indian Army.

Shah’s journey into acting was academic and rigorous. He graduated from Aligarh Muslim University before honing his craft at two of India's most prestigious institutions:

1.    National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi.
2.    Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

In 1982, he married fellow actress Ratna Pathak Shah. Together, they have two sons, Imaad and Vivaan, and a daughter, Heeba, from Naseeruddin's first marriage. The couple has been a driving force in Indian theatre through their troupe, Motley Productions.
