Farewells in sport often blend nostalgia with new beginnings, and the same sentiment echoed recently when Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan penned a beautiful tribute to Andre Russell – his ‘knight in shining armour’ – after the cricketer announced his retirement from the IPL and embraced his new role as KKR’s power coach. Two weeks ahead of the 2026 IPL mini-auction, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell left fans emotional after announcing his retirement from the tournament, marking the end of a powerhouse era.

The cricketer, one of Kolkata Knight Riders’ most iconic contributors, released a video on Sunday confirming that he would no longer participate as an IPL player.

Shortly after his announcement, KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan penned a heartfelt tribute, celebrating Andre Russell’s unforgettable run with the franchise. Replying directly to Andre’s post, Shah Rukh wrote, “Thank you for the wonderful memories, Andre. Our Knight in shining armour!!! Your contribution to @KKRiders is one for the books.”

The superstar also expressed happiness about Russell’s continued association with the side, as the player shifts into a new position – KKR’s ‘power coach’. Shah Rukh added, “Here’s to another chapter in your fantastic journey as a sportsman… The power coach - passing down the wisdom, the muscle and of course the power down to our boys in purple and gold… And yes, any other jersey would indeed look weird on you my man... Muscle Russell for life! Love u… on behalf of the team and everyone who loves the sport!!”

In his video, Andre Russell revealed that the decision came after multiple conversations with CEO Venky Mysore and Shah Rukh Khan, emphasising how thoughtfully the transition was made. The move follows KKR’s decision to release him ahead of the auction, after his performance numbers dipped in recent seasons. Yet, he remains widely regarded as one of the most lethal and game-changing players the IPL has seen.

For the unversed, Shah Rukh Khan has been the owner of KKR since 2008, jointly with Jay Mehta, husband of Juhi Chawla.

Meanwhile, on the film front, Shah Rukh was last seen in three major releases in 2023 – ‘Pathaan’, ‘Jawan’ and ‘Dunki’. He last appeared in a cameo role in son Aryan Khan’s debut series ‘The Ba***ds Of Bollywood’ on Netflix. SRK also featured in ‘The Roshans’.

The Bollywood superstar is currently shooting for Siddharth Anand’s ‘King’, co-starring Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Jaideep Ahlawat and others.
