Her father, Amreek Singh, was an aeronautical engineer in the Indian Air Force, and her mother was a school principal. Despite her eventual stardom, she was a studious child who originally aspired to become a doctor. She attended Carmel Convent School in Chandigarh and later completed her graduation in Political Science and Economics while already working in films.

The Big Break

At just 16 years old, Poonam won the Miss Young India title in 1978. Her victory caught the eye of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, who cast her in the blockbuster Trishul in 1978. Her song "Gapoochi Gapoochi Gum Gum" became an instant hit, paving the way for her lead role in the iconic film Noorie in 1979.

Career Evolution and Business Ventures

Beyond acting, Poonam is a pioneer in the industry. In 1991, she launched "Vanity," the first make-up van business in the Indian film industry. She has also been active in social causes, serving as a cultural ambassador and an advocate for drug and AIDS awareness. Today, she serves as the president of CINTAA (Cine and Television Artists Association).
