About Me
Madhavi, born Kanaka Vijayalakshmi, remains a distinguished icon of the 1980s and early 1990s Indian cinema. With a prolific career spanning 20 years, she appeared in over 300 films across Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada, earning a reputation for her intense dramatic range and natural screen presence.
Biography: From Dancing Star to Cinema Legend
Madhavi was born on September 14, 1962, in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. Before her film debut, she was a dedicated classical dancer, having trained in Bharatanatyam and folk dance. She reportedly performed over a thousand dance shows during her youth.
Her life took a cinematic turn when director Dasari Narayana Rao spotted her talent and cast her in the Telugu hit Thoorpu Padamara (1976). This role served as her gateway to stardom, followed by a breakthrough supporting role in K. Balachander’s Maro Charitra (1978).
Filmography: A Pan-Indian Superpower
Madhavi was one of the few actresses who achieved "A-list" status across multiple film industries simultaneously.
Telugu: She became a massive commercial star, frequently collaborating with Megastar Chiranjeevi. Their partnership in Khaidi (1983) and Intlo Ramayya Veedilo Krishnayya (1982) is still celebrated as a high point of 80s Telugu cinema.
Malayalam: This industry offered her most "author-backed" roles. Her portrayal of a dying mother in Akashadoothu (1993) is considered one of the most emotional performances in Malayalam history, winning her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She also stood out as the fierce Unniyarcha in the National Award-winning Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989).
Hindi (Bollywood): Madhavi entered Bollywood with the 1981 remake Ek Duuje Ke Liye, which earned her a Filmfare nomination. She later starred in legendary films like Agneepath (as Mary Mathew opposite Amitabh Bachchan), Geraftaar, and Swarg.
Tamil & Kannada: She held her own alongside titans like Rajinikanth in Thillu Mullu and Kamal Haasan in Tik Tik Tik. In Kannada, she was a favorite leading lady for Dr. Rajkumar in films like Haalu Jenu and Jeevana Chaitra.
Life After Stardom
In 1996, at the height of her career, Madhavi followed the guidance of her spiritual teacher, Swami Rama, and entered an arranged marriage with Ralph Sharma, an Indo-German pharmaceutical businessman.
The actress retired from the limelight and moved to New Jersey, USA. She successfully transitioned from being a silver-screen goddess to a private businesswoman and mother. Her three daughters—Tiffany, Priscilla, and Evelyn—have also garnered attention for their academic excellence, with reports highlighting their studies at prestigious institutions like Harvard and Oxford.
