Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh is taking his music to places it had never gone before. Diljit Dosanjh, who has also appeared in several Bollywood films, scripted history in April 2023 as he became the first-ever Punjabi singer to perform at Coachella. The singer-actor, known for hit songs like ‘Lover’, ‘Patiala Peg’, ‘G.O.A.T’, ‘Do You Know’ and more, also collaborated with ‘Cheap Thrills’ fame Sia for ‘Hass Hass’ in October 2023. And the song was a massive hit. Diljit also performed with Grammy-winning singer Ed Sheeran in Mumbai last month.
Can you imagine Ed Sheeran and Sia singing lines in Punjabi? Well, Diljit Dosanjh made it happen. In March 2024, Diljit Dosanjh also stole the show at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding celebrations in Jamnagar.
Diljit Dosanjh, who recently appeared in the new Hindi movie ‘Crew’, is now gearing up for the release of his next film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’. While he is always making news for his acting projects and music, very little is known about his personal life. The singer-actor has maintained intense secrecy when it comes to his personal life. But as per The Indian Express, he is married and even has a son.
In a new Indian Express profile, his friends shed light on who Diljit Dosanjh is as a person, while revealing details about his personal and professional life.
“An intensely private person, little is known about his family but friends say his wife is an American-Indian and they have a son, and his parents live in Ludhiana,” an excerpt from the profile read.
However, nothing beyond this bit was revealed about his marriage in the media portal’s profile.
Speculation surrounding Diljit Dosanjh’s marital status grabbed attention following a statement made by Kiara Advani during the promotions of the 2019 hit movie ‘Good Newzz’. She hinted at the being the only cast member without a child while promoting the film with her co-stars Diljit, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Akshay Kumar.
Diljit Dosanjh began making his own music when he was still in his teens. How did it all start? Balvir Boparai, a singer-composer who worked with a Ludhiana-based record company a decade ago, said that Diljit approached him in 2000, looking for opportunities.
“He barely had any beard, but he had the rhythm, did bhangra well, and tied a very good turban. He was 16 when we cut his first album Ishq Da Uda Ada (The ABC of Love). By the time he was 17, he was charging Rs 50,000 for a show and was getting booked almost every day during the wedding season,” said Balvir Boparai, who partnered with him.
“His father Balbir Singh was a bus driver with Punjab Roadways who enjoyed playing hockey in his spare time,” Makhan Singh, the sarpanch of Diljit Donsajh’s childhood village, told The Indian Express.
Diljit Dosanjh was sent to live with his uncle at the age of 11, and he said in a recent interview with Ranveer Allahbadia that this soured their relationship.
The singer-actor will be next seen playing the role of the slain Punjabi folk singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, in the upcoming Netflix film. Co-starring Parineeti Chopra, the biopic has been directed by Imtiaz Ali and will release on Netflix on April 12.
