"Never Been One To...": Zeenat Aman Reacts After Mumtaz Calls Her Marriage "Living Hell"
Zeenat Aman refused to comment further on Mumtaz's remarks as she does not believe in "tearing down" her colleagues
Veteran actress Zeenat Aman is known for her modern approach to life, and she says whatever she feels. She is not one to ever mince her words. Recently, the 'Don' actress had advised her fans to opt for live-in relationship before tying the knot with their partner. Amidst praise for her advice, Zeenat Aman was also criticised by veteran actress Mumtaz, saying Indian society cannot accept live-in relationships. In the latest entertainment news, the 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram' actress Zeenat Aman agreed that everyone has the right to express their opinion, however, she refused to comment further on Mumtaz's remarks as she does not believe in "tearing down" her colleagues.
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I’ve never been one to comment on others personal lives or tear down my colleagues, and I’m not going to start now," Zeenat Aman told Hindustan Times.
For the unversed, last week, Zeenat Aman had urged her fans not to succumb to societal pressures, particularly regarding live-in relationships. “I’m aware that Indian society is a little uptight about “living in sin” but then again, society is uptight about so many things! Log kya kahenge," she wrote on Instagram.
It was then that Mumtaz decided to give an interview to a media portal, and it was there that she disagreed with Zeenat Aman's viewpoint, and she also made a pointed remark about Zeenat's own marital life.
"Zeenat should be careful with what she is advising. She has all of a sudden come into this huge social media popularity, and I can understand her excitement about sounding like a cool aunty. But giving advice that is counter to our moral values is not the solution to increasing your following," Mumtaz told Zoom.
"If girls adopt the live-in culture, marriage as an institution will become obsolete. Tell me honestly, would you marry your son to a girl whom you know to have been in a live-in relationship? Aap Zeenat ko hi le lo misaal ke taur par… She knew Mazhar Khan for years before marrying him. Her marriage was a living hell. She should be the last person doling out advice on relationships," she added.
For the unversed, Zeenat Aman first reportedly tied the knot with actor Sanjay Khan in 1978, but their union was short-lived. Zeenat Aman then married actor Mazhar Khan in 1985. The couple remained together until Mazhar’s death in 1998.
Speaking about her experiences with marriage on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal in 1999, Zeenat had said, “Mazhar never wanted me to grow as an individual or as an artist. He always wanted me to be with the kids and be at home. During the very first year of marriage I realised I had made a huge mistake, but I decided to live by it and make it work."
"I tried to make it work for another 12 years. There was no light at the end of the tunnel for me. There was not a single moment of happiness or joy during those 12 years. But I still tried making it work," she added.
