As the beloved ‘Student of the Year’ franchise completes 14 years today, October 19, filmmaker-producer Karan Johar is giving it a massive, unexpected makeover. Trading the sun-kissed campus romance, high-fashion, and glossy rivalries for a gritty, blood-stained world of mystery, the franchise is officially moving to the digital space with ‘Student Of The Year: After Dark’. The new web series not only marks a radical tonal shift but also serves as the highly anticipated OTT debut for Shanaya Kapoor.

Taking to social media to announce the project, Karan Johar reflected on the 14-year legacy while teasing the absolute madness to come. He wrote: “Nostalgia is working overtime this week!!! As we complete 14 years of our beloved SOTY franchise…we embark on a new journey taking it forward but it’s now in AFTER DARK! Gritty, gory, unabashed and absolute madness!!!! Gear up!”

The original ‘Student of the Year’, released in 2012, was a quintessential college drama that famously served as the acting launchpad for Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra. The 2019 sequel followed suit, starring Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday, and Tara Sutaria. However, under the direction of Reema Maya and produced by Dharmatic Entertainment, ‘After Dark’ reimagines the familiar halls of St. Teresa’s as a high-stakes, violent thriller competition.

Reflecting on this stark departure from the original films, Karan Johar shared in a statement, “When I look at this new chapter, I see a phoenix rising. We began this franchise with big dreams in 2012 and now we're breaking every rule we set. With Reema's genre-defying direction and Shanaya's powerful double-role performance, we're setting the stage for something spectacular. Shanaya isn't just stepping into the spotlight, she's shattering it and the first look is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Shanaya Kapoor, who reportedly tackles a complex double role, is ready to challenge audience perceptions with her chilling, frozen, and bloody first-look avatar. Speaking about her unconventional debut, the actress stated, “Student Of The Year: After Dark Web Series for me is more than just a project, it's a bold statement. Portraying this character in a contrasting manner is a deliberate choice to challenge expectations and redefine what audiences anticipate from mainstream storytelling. The role is layered, flawed, and unapologetically real. Stepping into her world has been the most challenging and a rewarding experience.”
Director Reema Maya echoed this enthusiasm for breaking the traditional mould. “This isn't going to be what you expect," she explained. "It is Student Of The Year, stripped to its bones and reimagined as a thriller competition web-series. Karan Johar has put his faith in my voice and vision and I'm excited to have fun with this genre. The web series format is giving us a wide canvas for the conversations we want to have with our youth. We had so much fun with the music of the show. The cast is young and incredibly talented! Shanaya is a director's actor - prepared and hardworking.”
The show also stars newcomers Divik Sharma and Manya Grover, promising a fresh ensemble for the streaming era.
Fans won't have to wait long to witness the dark mysteries of St. Teresa's unfold. ‘Student Of The Year: After Dark’ is set to premiere on JioHotstar on November 13.
