Legendary ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas has died aged 72 after a prolonged illness.

Legendary singer Pankaj Udhas has died, aged 72. The news of his demise was shared by his family, as reported by News18. In a statement, the family said, "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on February 26, 2024, due to a prolonged illness.” In the latest entertainment news, singer Sonu Nigam also reacted to this sad news and he called Pankaj Udhas as the "most important part" of his childhood. 

Taking to his Instagram account, Sonu wrote, "One of the most important part of my childhood, is lost today. Shri Pankaj Udhas ji, I will miss you forever. My heart cries knowing that you are no more. Thank you for being there. Om Shanti.”

Taking to X, actor Manoj Bajpayee wrote, "Saddening!!! Rest in peace Pankaj udhas ji ! Had the privilege of listening to you and getting mesmerised by the sweet texture of your voice and Sur."

Taking to X, singer Sona Mohapatra wrote, "Full of grace & a thorough gentleman, I met Pankaj Udhas’ jee when he had invited me to perform in his Khazana Ghazal Festival. While many of us know him as a singer,performer, he was also a composer par excellence with super hits like - Ek Taraf Uska Ghar, Chand Jaisa #OmShanti."

The legendary singer passed away in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. 

“Pankaj sir was suffering from a prolonged illness and wasn’t keeping well the last few days. He died this morning around 11 am at Breach Candy hospital," Indian Express quoted singer's representative as saying. 

Pankaj Udhas' last rites will be taking place on Tuesday.

For the unversed, the singer is known for his memorable ghazals such as 'Chitthi Aayi Hai' from 'Naam', 'Na Kajre Ki Dhar' from 'Mohra', 'Chandi Jaisa Rang', 'Ek Taraf Uska Ghar' and 'Ahista'.
