Is 'RRKPK' inspired by a famous Bollywood couple? What Karan Johar said.

Karan Johar’s recent directorial venture ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ performed well at the box office, having crossed the Rs 150 crore mark in India and collecting over Rs 300 crore worldwide. This is an impressive feat to achieve for the family entertainer as it was facing competition from two Hollywood movies – Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ and Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’. A few days after the release of the Karan Johar directorial, ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘OMG 2’ also arrived in cinemas, giving the movie stiff competition.

‘RRKPK’, which marked the reunion of Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh after their 2019 hit film ‘Gully Boy’, received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Apart from its innovative storyline, the film’s music and dialogues also garnered immense praise.

Up until now, fans perceived the storyline of ‘RRKPK’ as a work of pure imagination. However, KJo, in a new interview, suggested otherwise.

In an interview with Mid-Day, Karan Johar hinted that he may have drawn inspiration from a Bollywood couple for the narrative. Can you guess who they are? Well, it’s none other than Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna.

Karan Johar said, “Maybe subconsciously (I got inspired). They have a tremendous friendship in their marriage. I’ve had dinners with them, meals with them, hung out with them. And there’s a terrific kind of comfort in their camaraderie. He finds her hilarious, she finds him hilarious, for different reasons.”

He added, “So I felt it wasn’t impossible for people who come from two different demographics of society, two stratas, to actually find love. It’s like we put ourselves in boxes. Like when we’re finding a relationship, we put ourselves in places where we’re comfortable. But tomorrow, you can fall in love with someone anywhere.”

Talking about Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna, they started dating during Umesh Mehra’s 1999 action film ‘International Khiladi’. In 2001, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna tied the knot. The two are proud parents to a son, Aarav, and a daughter, Nitara.

For the unversed, Karan Johar and Twinkle Khanna are childhood friends. KJo went to the same boarding school in childhood as Twinkle Khanna, before he left the school.

Karan Johar had earlier revealed that he wrote the character of Tina (named after Twinkle's nickname) in his 1998 directorial debut ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ for her, but she rejected the role. The role was eventually essayed by Rani Mukerji.

Karan Johar also shares a close bond with Akshay Kumar, who has worked in several of films under the filmmaker’s banner Dharma Productions, including Karan Malhotra's 2015 sports film ‘Brothers’, Anurag Singh's 2019 historical ‘Kesari’, Raj Mehta's 2019 rom-com ‘Good Newwz’, Rohit Shetty's 2021 cop drama ‘Sooryavanshi’, and most recently, Raj Mehta's ‘Selfiee’.

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna appeared together on an episode of Karan's talk show ‘Koffee with Karan’ Season 5.

Coming back to ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, in the movie, Rocky (played by Ranveer Singh), a Punjabi West Delhi businessman, falls in love with Rani (Alia Bhatt), a progressive Bengali journalist.
