The festival is celebrated with great pomp and excitement amongst Hindu families in India. Diwali, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the victory of light over darkness, falls on the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, the festival of lights was celebrated on October 20.
While fairy lights, lamps, firecrackers and rangolis are common sights on Deepawali, the auspicious festival typically spans five days, each with its unique significance and rituals. The five-day-long festival starts with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj.
