Since the IPL season is on, we decided to list out our favourite celebrity moments in the cash-rich league.

Indian Premier League (IPL) is probably the best T20 tournament in the world, and fans across the globe look forward to the cash-rich league every year. Currently, the 17th edition of IPL is going on, but every year, the premier T20 tournament manages to surprise us. There is too much entertainment on offer and the cricket on display is just too brilliant to be missed. From high-scoring games to low-scoring thrillers to multiple super overs, the Indian Premier League has seen it all.

MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians have won the tournament a record five times. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have won the tournament twice, while Rajasthan Royals (2007), Gujarat Titans (2022), SunRisers Hyderabad (2016) and Deccan Chargers (2009) have won the tournament on one occasion each. CSK won the tournament in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.

On the other hand, Mumbai Indians won the tournament in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. KKR took home the trophy in 2012 and 2014. KKR is co-owned by Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, while Preity Zinta co-owns Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab. Back in the day, even Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra used to own a stake in Rajasthan Royals. IPL allows a perfect blend of entertainment and cricket, and this is the main reason behind the league being a major talking point.

If you are living under a rock, and still don't know what IPL is, and how the tournament is played, let us tell you a little about it. The Indian Premier League usually takes place during the summer, between March and May each year. The cash-rich league also has an exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Programme, and this results in fewer international cricket matches during the IPL seasons.

For the unversed, it was following India's victory at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a franchise-based T20 cricket competition known as the Indian Premier League. Lalit Modi, who was the BCCI Vice-President back in the day, led the IPL initiative, and it was he who provided details of the tournament, including its format, prize money, franchise revenue system, and squad composition rules.

To determine team ownership, an auction for the eight franchises was held on January 24, 2008. As per reports, the reserve prices for the eight franchises totalled USD 400 million, but the auction ultimately raised USD 723.59 million. The league officially commenced in April 2008, featuring CSK, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Deccan Chargers, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

When the tournament started in 2008, there were just eight teams to start off with, and now as the tournament has gotten bigger and bigger, the tournament is being played with 10 teams. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants -- the two new teams were introduced before the IPL 2022 season. Earlier, teams like Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala were also a part of the IPL, but for some off-field reasons, they were not able to stay a part of the tournament for too long.

It is no surprise that the IPL is the most popular cricket league in the world. In 2014, the tournament was ranked sixth in terms of average attendance among all sports leagues. Looking at the success of the IPL, other Indian sports leagues such as the Indian Super League (ISL) and Pro Kabaddi League (PSL) have been established. After the IPL, other cricket boards also came up with their T20 tournaments such as Big Bash (Australia), Pakistan Super League (PSL), SA20 (South Africa), and Caribbean Premiere League (CPL).

Over the years, the media rights of IPL have continued to fetch more money, and ahead of the IPL 2023 season, the tournament sold its media rights for the next 4 seasons for USD 6.4 billion to Viacom18 and Star Sports. As per reports, each IPL match is currently valued at a whopping USD 13.4 million.
