'Baby Reindeer's Alleged Real Martha Sues Netflix, Seeks USD 170 Million In Damages

The Scottish woman who has been claiming to be the inspiration behind Richard Gadd's hit Netflix series 'Baby Reindeer', has sued the streaming giant, seeking monetary damages of at least USD 170 million, as per Variety. The report states that Fiona Harvey, has publicly stated that the character of Martha in the show, played by Jessica Gunning, is based on her.
As per Variety, Fiona Harvey is suing Netflix, alleging "defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and violations of her right of publicity."
The suit wad filed on Thursday in the US District Court for the Central District of California. The lawsuit alleges that Netflix told "brutal lies” about her in the 'Baby Reindeer' series.
“The lies that Defendants told about Harvey to over 50 million people worldwide include that Harvey is a twice-convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison, and that Harvey sexually assaulted Gadd,” her complaint says, as per Variety.
“Defendants told these lies, and never stopped, because it was a better story than the truth, and better stories made money," the complaint added.
The lawsuit further states, "As a result of Defendants’ lies, malfeasance and utterly reckless misconduct, Harvey’s life had been ruined. Simply, Netflix and Gadd destroyed her reputation, her character and her life.”
As soon as the lawsuit became public, a Netflix representative also came up with a statement, saying, "We intend to defend this matter vigorously and to stand by Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story.”
Talking about 'Baby Reindeer', the show written by Richad Gadd is based on the comedian's real-life story of being stalked and sexually assaulted by a customer in the London pub, where he worked.
