Did you know that India’s Oscar-winning song Naatu Naatu was shot in Ukraine just before the ongoing war started?
Did you know that the Mariinsky Palace, the beautiful complex built in 1744 that forms the perfect backdrop for this song, is the official residence of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy?
We still do not know if the president, who was an accomplished stage dancer and actor before he entered politics attended, or took any interest in the shooting of the song during those peaceful times.
For that, we will have to await any revelation from S S Rajmouli, director of the film RRR that features the song.
He revealed the song’s Ukraine connection only after the song won the Oscar on March 8.
The original location was to be in India, but the monsoon last year thwarted it. Rajamouli was hesitant to choose Ukraine because it is the presidential palace.

“I thought I would have to look for some other location as it was the Presidential Palace, but the Ukrainian authorities said: “No problems. It is Ukraine, you can get the job done.” He thanked the Ukrainian president and the people in an interview with Variety magazine.
"The colours of the palace, the size of the palace, the size of the ground for the dancers to be there was the exact right size," the filmmaker said.
Naatu Naatu, composed by MM Keeravani Naatu Naatu, as we all know, has also won a Golden Globe, making it the first Indian song to achieve this feat. It was the first Indian film in over two decades to be nominated for an Academy Award.
